Born in Somerville, Massachusetts to Joseph McAnneny and Loretta Coyne on March 18th, 1944, he grew up idolizing Ted Williams and the Boston Red Sox, never dreaming they would take down the “hated” Yankees on their way to the first of four championships in his lifetime. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Connecticut and a Masters at Penn State University where he met his wife Susan Kappler. During the Vietnam war he served in the Army as an intelligence analyst in Washington, DC and was honored with an award.
Passionate about economics, he went on to join the Department of Justice (DOJ) Antitrust Division as an economist and earned his Ph. D. in economics at George Washington University. It was at DOJ where he earned his nickname “Chief” from his colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends. He joined Economists Inc. in 1984 where he worked on major antitrust cases including US Steel and Coca Cola until his retirement 33 years later.
In his later years he would talk about his son Christopher and daughter Jessica as what he was most proud of in life. He cherished his time with them, carving out time to coach their youth sports teams and sweating away on deck as the “Chief” timer at their swim meets. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, mentoring UCONN economics students, and of course watching his beloved Red Sox and Huskies. He was most at home on Cape Cod each summer, enjoying the New England breeze, watching the boats ferry through the canal, spending time with family, and treating everyone to ice cream at Four Seas.
He is survived by his loving wife Susan, his two children Christopher (Stephany) and Jessica (Bill), his brothers Robert (Melissa) and Brian, and his four adoring grandchildren Hunter, Madison, Tyler and Audrey who lovingly refer to him as “Baba.”
A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Friday, August 6th at the Mount Vernon Country Club on Old Mill Road in Alexandria, Virginia.
