Judith Hunter, age 92, passed away on Friday October 30th at Inspire Rehabilitation and Health Center in Washington DC. She will be dearly remembered by her sister, children, and extended family members.
Judith was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1934 to Dorothy and Harry Spang. She was an only child until she was 11 and one of her dearest wishes was granted upon the arrival of her younger sister Marilyn. The two became dear friends and close companions in a cherished bond throughout their lives.
Judith was a child who loved books and music, singing in church choirs and acting in school performances with a true sense of drama. After graduating from Reading High school in 1951 she worked several clerical positions and finally as a secretary at Gilbert Associates where she remained until her marriage to Charles Kurtz, a claims adjustor in 1961. They lived in Maryland and Northern Virginia and welcomed two children into the world, a daughter Maria and a son Steve.
The couple divorced in 1980 and Judith returned to her home town in Reading working at Alvernia College book store and then as a docent and interpreter at Ephrata Cloister, a German religious community in the 1700s and now part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. She loved it. Her interest in books, history and even theatre were part of interpreting this community and teaching it to a modern audience.
Judith was also integral part of her own church at Calvary United Church of Christ in Reading and served on the Vestry as a way of supporting a community that meant so much to her.
Upon retirement, Judith spent some years in Washington State with her sister Marilyn before returning to live in Washington DC. She battled multiple health challenges as she entered her final years and closed her eyes at last having lived a long and eventful life.
