

Lyman Walter Harbottle, affectionately known to all as "Jug", passed away April 15th from complications of pneumonia. A resident of Alexandria, VA for more than 50 years, Jug lived a vibrant and independent 91 years, having served for 30 years as a US Naval officer and 25 years as a stock broker with Ferris, Baker Watts.
Born on September 6, 1923 in Oakdale, Nebraska to Walter Scott and Edna Mae (Oakes) Harbottle, Jug relocated with his family to Pomona, California in 1935 and graduated from Pomona High School in 1941. He was awarded his Eagle Scout at age 16 and was active in school and civic-sponsored athletic programs. During his teenage years, he worked with Arabian horses at the Kellogg Ranch.
In November 1942, Jug enlisted in the Naval Aviation V-5 program to train as a naval aviator and in October 1944, he was commissioned as an ensign and awarded the gold wings of a navy pilot. He served in patrol squadrons in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters until released from active duty in September 1946.
Returning to his academic career, Jug graduated from Mount San Antonio College in 1948 and Pomona College in 1950. During his college years Jug worked as a counselor and deputy probation officer with the Los Angeles Juvenile Camp Program. He pursued his love of flying with the “weekend warriors” and trained to be a helicopter pilot.
In response to the Korean War, Jug was recalled to active duty in 1952, beginning a challenging and fascinating career in both helicopter and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft squadrons, on carrier ships, with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OpNav) and with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Highlights of his career include training at the US Naval War College and serving 3 ½ years as an Exchange Officer with the British Royal Navy.
After retiring as a US Navy Commander, Jug pursued another lifelong interest in the stock market, becoming a stock broker and joining Ferris and Co., later Ferris, Baker Watts and serving as manager of their McLean office. He retired in 2001 as a Senior Vice President of Investments.
Jug married Eyvonne Lorraine Butler in April 1949, beginning a deeply committed and adventure-filled marriage of 52 years until her death in 2001. The couple had two children, Scott Alan Harbottle (deceased 2009) and Lisa Harbottle Bates (Thomas) of Cashiers, NC. The family includes five grandchildren: Thomas Harbottle (Michelle), Alan Harbottle, Sara Bates King (Galen), Tucker and Hayden Bates and two great-grandchildren: Ethan and Caitlyn Harbottle.
In April 2008, Jug married Shirley Williams of Long Beach, CA and added her son Thomas (deceased 2012) and two granddaughters, Sarah and Annie to the family. Together, Jug and Shirley continued to live life to the fullest, pursing their love of travel, music, sports and family.
Jug was a member of Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and remained active in church, community and civic associations throughout his life.
A memorial service will be held May 2, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
