Margaret “Peggy” Chaison, 96, a resident of Alexandria, VA for 37 years, passed away on January 10, 2024 in Alexandria. Peggy was born on April 27, 1927 in Conshohocken, PA to the late James D. McCarthy, Sr. & Lenore O’Connor. Peggy grew up in Baltimore, MD & graduated from Eastern High School in 1945. She was one of 6 siblings.
Peggy married Dr. Ramón A. Cabañas in June, 1948 in Baltimore, MD. They moved to Utuado, Puerto Rico (PR) where their first son, Brian R. Cabañas, was born in 1952. Answering Ramón’s call to duty with the Army, they moved to La Rochelle, France where their second son, Robert A. Cabañas was born in 1954. They returned to the states & lived in Buffalo, NY until 1961 when they moved back to PR.
Peggy lived in PR for 25 years. She was a homemaker, Welcome Wagon Hostess, & Welcome Wagon District Manager. In her circle of friends, she was recognized as an outstanding pastry chef. Her specialty was flan. She was also a gracious hostess who enjoyed entertaining in her home. Peggy was known as a classy lady, always well dressed and looking her best. She was kind, generous, warm hearted, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
After the death of her husband Ramón, Peggy returned to the mainland & settled in Alexandria at the Montebello Condominiums in 1986.
Peggy was a devout Catholic & dedicated parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria. She was also an avid bridge card player & a fan of Wheel of Fortune. She volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels & as an office worker for the local police. In 1988 Peggy married Frederick Chaison Jr, her second husband.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, James D. McCarthy & Lenore O’Connor; her beloved husband of 37 years, Ramón A. Cabañas; her beloved second husband of 4 years, Frederick Chaison Jr; her son, Brian R. Cabañas; her siblings, Patrick McCarthy, Lynn Stumbo, Rose Marie Brandner, & James McCarthy; and her stepchildren John Chaison & Elizabeth (Betsy) Chaison. She is survived by her son, Robert A. Cabañas (Ina); grandson, Ramón M. Cabañas; two great-grandchildren, Liam Hatch & Ava Mae Cabañas; sister, Mary Harlow; and stepchildren, Emily (Lee) Chaison, Frederick Chaison III, Nancy (Kathy) Chaison, Deborah (Douglas) Chaison, Melanie (Jim) Chaison, & Lucy Chaison. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, & great-nephews.
A Mass & Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 11:00am at St. Louis Catholic Church, 2907 Popkins Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306.
