

Philomena J. "Mena" Stewart passed away on November 5, 2012. She was born at Morley's Bridge, County Kerry Ireland and was raised in the Dublin area. Later she emigrated to New York and then to Long Beach, California where she met her husband to be , George W. Stewart who at the time was an Ensign in the navy. They were married in 1958. During a 30 year naval career, the family lived in many parts of the country on both the East and West coast, including a two year stint in Italy. The family moved to Alexandria, VA after her husband retired from the navy as a Captain in 1986.
She is survived by George, her husband of 55 years; her sons Bryan and Mark, her daughter Sheila; daughter-in-law Wanda; and granddaughters Anna Grace and Audrey, all of who live in the general Washington area. She also is survived by an extensive family in Ireland including her brother Noel and her sisters Sheila, Maureen, and Margaret as well as many nieces and nephews, most of who live in the Dublin area.
Mena was known for her sparkling personality along with her Irish wit and humor and she was greatly loved by her family and friends. She will be sadly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA on Friday, November 16, Visitation at 10 a.m., and the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. It is planned to have her ashes shipped to Ireland in order that she be buried next to her mother, Margaret (Morley) Spillane at a cemetery in Killarney. A second memorial service will be held near her birth place in Kilgarvin, County Kerry, Ireland.
