On August 15, 2016 Richard Wm. Anson, of Alexandria, Virginia died at home at age 89. He was a decorated WWII, Korea and Vietnam veteran. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he graduated from UC Berkley in 1952 and entered the Army as a Distinguished Military Graduate.
He served in the US Army retiring as a Major General after 32 years. Among his leadership posts were CG US Army Element Land Southeast and Deputy CG NATO Headquarters Land Southeast (Turkey), Office of the Army Chief of Staff, Commander of US Ground Forces in Panama, Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Deputy US Army Inspector General. He has Masters Degrees from Ohio State University and Command and General Staff College. Military Honors include the Distinguished Service Medal, The Defense Distinguished Service Medal, three awards of the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, five Bronze Star Medals with Combat “V” Devise, the Meritorious Service Medal, seven Air Medal Awards, two Army Commendation Medals, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, The Combat Infantry Badge with star and the Parachutist Badge. Retiring in 1984, after 34 years of decorated uniform service, he served as the Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Infantry Regiment Association, 1st Infantry Division and a military consultant and board member for various corporations.
Gen Anson is survived by his loving wife Mary, of over 58 years, daughter Sandra Bullard, son-in-law BGen (USMC ret) John Bullard, son Richard Wm. Anson Jr, , grandchildren Erin and Ryan Bullard, Trey and Jessica Anson, brother Robert Wetzel, the soldiers with whom he served and a grateful nation. Loved and respected by friends and family, he will be deeply missed. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 1:00 pm.at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, VA with burial to follow at Arlington National Cemetery.
