Robert L. Fischer of Alexandria, VA On December 24, 2018. Leaves behind: Beloved wife of 54 years, Kathleen Fischer. Loving Father of three Children, Elizabeth (Gray), Robert Jr. (Carrie), and John (Belinda). Five Grandchildren, Lesley (David), Samuel, Lily, Grant, Rajchel, and one Great Granddaughter, Miriam. Born in St. Louis, MO, January 12, 1934. Bob enlisted in the US NAVY in 1957, and was commissioned in 1958. He went to Naval Flight Training for the A-4 Skyhawk. For the next several years he flew the A-4s as part of Attack Squadrons VA-86 and VA-64, including deployments aboard the US Naval Aircraft Carriers the USS Independence and the USS Wasp. Bob was responsible for the organization of the first Jet Carrier Qualifications for a Reserve Squadron since the Korean War. He went from Active Duty to Naval Reserves, serving our country for 27 years. In 1966 Bob transitioned his flying career to fly for United Airlines where he retired as a Captain flying the 737. During his time with United he flew the Viscount, 727, 737, and 767 aircraft, for another 30 years of flight. Bob loved to fly. He never met a stranger, was quick with a smile, and could fix anything. He had a great love for his family and provided endless support. He has only just left but is missed terribly. Come celebrate Bob's life at a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 11:00am. Demaine Funeral Home, 525 S Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, and at a casual gathering at Primo Family Restaurant, 1636 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA 22307, following the Service. Interment to follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's name to the NAVY Relief Society, 875 N.
