Dear Lamb Family,

While you don't know me, know that Rob occupies a place in my heart as a professional friend and mentor.  Many words of wisdom that he passed on, echo to me to this day.  My deepest sympathies to you all and may peace and beautiful memories return soon.

Rob was a valued colleague. Always willing to help, provide valuable and insightful advice and encouragement.  Reading the condolences, I see this was consistent with how he lived his life outside of work. A genuine, truly decent person who will be missed.

When Rob retired from coaching Gunston as head coach, the majority of his team stuck together all the way through U19 Rec Soccer. Our get togethers at the end of the season were needless to say boisterous with lots of laughs and Rob's heartfelt commentary about each individual player brought tears to my eyes. His thoughtfulness at finding what was remarkable about each boy on the team was touching at the end of each season and a memory I cherish. The care he took to craft each compliment and ability to identify growth in each of his players were lovely steps in the development of our boys into young men.

My fondest memories of Rob revolve around Gunston Rec Soccer and him leading the team as head coach. His love of the game and developing his players was unfaltering and palpable. I attribute my son's foundation and love of the game to their experiences with Rob as their coach. He built a team of talented young boys and friendships that have lasted in excess of a decade.

32 years together.  Two beautiful sons.  So blessed and thankful to have had you, sweet husband, love of my life.  Love you forever.  Ever mine, ever thine, ever ours.  ❤️ D

I’m going to miss Rob a lot. He was such a good man. He was friendly, quick with a joke. He was empathetic and caring. He was angry at injustice and turned that anger into action. He was genuine and I’m going to miss him. 

I think we first met playing soccer on Sunday mornings at Sandburg middle school. It was a bunch of over the hill guys just trying to get some exercise, have fun and avoid getting hurt. He was always a joy even at 7 am on a Sunday. 

Of course, he was one of the founding members of the Slightly Overweight Fathers of Alexandria (SOFA). He was a perfect ambassador of SOFA. He was a good father and husband. He volunteered for all the things that good dads do. He was the first champion of our fantasy football league and his name is forever etched on our trophy. 

After too many school shootings, Rob organized and led community discussions about how we could reduce gun violence. I was impressed by Rob’s leadership on this emotionally charged topic. He went out of his way to draw in people who supported gun rights along with people who felt passionately about restricting them. And, in that chaos, he patiently fostered a constructive dialogue focused on finding solutions. 

I know he felt sucker punched by cancer. But he handled it with grace and class and never gave up. Even before cancer, he seemed to have an appreciation for what truly mattered in life. After his diagnosis, when many people might have lost hope, his appreciation and perspective only sharpened. He was and remains an inspiration. 

Rob was a good man and I will miss him.

I am heartbroken to hear about Rob’s passing. He was one of those rare people who could make you laugh in any situation—quick-witted, sharp, and always ready with a perfectly timed comment. More than that, he was a truly loyal friend, someone you could always count on.

I’ll always cherish the memories—poker nights filled with laughs, the ups and downs of our fantasy football league, and the time we spent on the basketball court, both playing and coaching our boys together. Those moments meant a lot, and they’re memories I’ll carry with me.

Rob made a lasting impact on everyone around him, and he will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with Diane, Robert, and Charlie.

Rob has been an inspiration to me in so many ways. He loved life to its fullest and in all the right ways. Rob was funny, kind, thoughtful, convicted in his beliefs and a wonderful husband, father, son, colleague and friend. 

He modeled for Robert and Charlie what it means to be a man of integrity. A devoted and loving husband. An engaged, supporting and proud father. A man committed to his career in order to support his family. And a man who made an impact in his own communities…church, work, neighborhood, etc. 

Rob battled this awful disease with the same conviction and passion he did everything else in life…with energy, defiance and positivity. 

I am a better person because of my friendship with Rob and eternally grateful for the time we spent together.

Rob was the type of person who, whenever his name came up in conversation, the response was always "Rob Lamb, what a great guy." And even though I didn't have the honor of being very close with Rob, or with you, Diane, or with you, Charlie, or with you, Rob, I know what a great friend he has been to so many of us and I can only imagine what he was like as a husband and father. You have my deepest condolences along with my thoughts and prayers. I and the rest of the SOFA guys are ready to do absolutely anything we can for you, now and in the future.

Diane, Rob, Jr, Charlie,   I am Joseph Inzerillo and part of SOFA group and was a huge fan of your father and always loved chatting with him at the SOFA draft each year.  I enjoyed his sense of humor and he always made me laugh each time we talked.   My heart pours out for each of you and my condolences to your entire family.  We will always be here to support your family.   My condolences again.

Rob was an amazing co-worker and friend. He was smart,  engaged, and got the best out of everyone. He led with vision, passion and always with a great sense of humor. He talked proudly about his family. He loved DC sports. I will never forget the last time I saw him, he came up and gave me a great big hug. I will miss Rob.  My condolences to the family. He was a great man. Rest assured that he is in heaven watching over you all now.

Rob, you meant so much to your family and friends.  The love can physically be felt. Rest assured I will be there for Diane, Robert and Charlie. Go in Peace. Love, Karen

Growing up has taught me two things: aging is not for the weak and time really does fly by. It feels like yesterday that Rob and I were at Nationals stadium for a baseball game—one of the many things he loved. Sports brought him and I together on every text, call, and family event. Arch-rivals are the Nationals and Phillies… the Commanders and Eagles… and naturally we would poke fun at each other on how the other’s team was doing. When we set up a fantasy football league, Rob was taking it so seriously. He would constantly talk smack in our family group chat (even to Chris who didn’t know what he was doing nor did he watch any football.) He loved rubbing it in when won.  Rob was competitive, in which, is a quality I really enjoyed being around as someone who is also competitive. Rob was also a kind soul. He made an effort to make sure my brother and I were always okay. When our mother passed away, Rob and Diane would have us down in their home in Virginia. He ALWAYS made sure we had a bed, food, and fun activities to keep us occupied. Him and Diane made sure we had our milk and flintstone multivitamin too! However, what defined Rob the most was his family, especially, his sons. Along with Diane, he has raised absolutely incredible, responsible, dedicated, smart, hard working, caring young men in Robert and Charlie. Rob is what every man SHOULD aspire to be. There will NEVER be enough words on this Earth that can explain how amazing he was. Instead, it’s shown by the success he achieved, memories we have of him, and men he has raised. Rob, rest easy and be proud of the legacy you have left. Enjoy the Kingdom of Heaven and we will all meet you there one day.

When I think of Rob the words quality, character, kindness, and depth spring to mind. A great guy. To the family: I am so sorry, but you won the lottery to have him.

If you can say one thing about Rob, it was he loved his family.  You can see the joy and pride he has and we will never forget that quality.  Rob was a father, a husband, coach, and the best son we could ever wish for.  He brought a light into this world and anyone who ever meet him was forever changed for the good.  We will always cherish our memories of you and you will live in our hearts forever.  God rest your soul and now rest in peace.  We love you with all our hearts.  Mom and Dad

Last Christmas Rob made a huge effort to bring the boys together for a traditional German meal.  He loved Christmas!!!!

Rob/Dad,

You were the light and love of our lives.  Our rock.  We are heartbroken that you are gone but know that you will be watching over us from Heaven.  Your Spirit will also live forever inside of us.  Thank you for being the best husband and father.  We were so lucky to have you.

So saddened by this news. LZ was Rush Chairman of our college fraternity at William and Mary. He offered me a shake on my birthday in 1987. In recent years we had passionate but respectful debates on Facebook. He was very sincere and deep and we messaged every couple of weeks since last October.
