I just wanted to let the family know that Shell is and will always be very near and dear to me. His widower Ms. Cleo is in a very nice memory care facility and I must go down to see her very soon.  I've gotten so busy of late,  that I've not made my journey to see her as often as I should. On this day, I will suspend my schedule and focus on all of the memories and good times that I spent with Shell over the 45 years.  May his soul continue to rest peacefully.

West Mason Ave.  He touched everyones lives here and made us all better.  He will be sorely missed, but will always be a part of our legacy.

I will always miss you from now till the day we meet again, you have been my brother and my confidant in life. The space you left could never be filled, I remember lots of small gestures and love you gave me since our childhood. I always admired you as my big brother from the time you left India till the time we met up again in the USA. I remember the times we spent together with our sister, the late Saroj Sharma, and when I was getting in trouble, you always stood for me. I will always miss our time during Christmas together. I will miss your free advice on my matter.

Sushil exemplified the term Love Thy Neighbor in a quite literal sense.  The Troxell family was lucky enough to move into a house a couple doors down from 'Shil some 20 years ago.  He was quick to welcome us to the neighborhood and continued to be a welcoming presence as our kids grew to adulthood.  He was a favorite on the street among the kids, the adults, and the pets!  He always had a treat handy for the dogs and the kids, which was nice, but it was his kind smile, his quick wit, and his sincere interest in others which made him so beloved amongst his neighbors.  I had the pleasure of chatting with 'Shil nearly everyday as he would invariably be out on his front porch or just pop out to say hello when I walked by with our dog, Sammy Boots.  Sammy still finds an excuse to slow his roll, pretend to find something interesting to sniff out, and generally loiter in front of 111 W Mason when we're on our walks - he's not fooling anyone, he's just giving Sushil a bit of extra time to come out for a visit, a couple pats on the head, and of course, some treats.  We miss him everyday.  We're so sorry to see him go all too soon.  We're sad he's gone but forever grateful and happy to have known such a kind, caring and loving man.

Growing up I never really felt like I belonged, but that never was the case in Gramps' house. Even though I wasn't a Sharma by blood, he was the most accepting, loving and caring grandparent a kid could ask for.  He afforded me countless opportunities I would have never been able to repay him for, but I'm forever grateful. Gramps, you are one of the most determined and successful people I have ever known. Ben and I often talk about how we want exactly what you worked so hard to build - a beautiful family, caring kids, near perfect grandchild (hehe) and so many beach trips we lose count. We miss you so much and what I wouldn't give to hear a 'huh?" before I even finish my sentence. Love you. Until we meet again. 

The first time that I met Sushil was in the 1960s when he and Cleo came to Toronto to visit my family. Like most tourists, they saw the local sites but they left with me an everlasting memory of their decency and grace.

Over the years, time and geographic distance separated us – as Alexandria was his home and mine was, for the most part, Toronto. And yet, somehow I always felt connected to him and his family. In fact, whenever possible, I would make queries to gather bits of information on his and his family’s well being.

I had planned on visiting Sushil and his family in 2020; alas COVID-19 travel restrictions got in the way. I have regrets about not being able to complete that visit.

Neal (Sushil’s son) has a wonderful tribute to this father in the passage that he cites. Neal wrote, “[he] looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.”  From my perspective, these words capture the essence of Neal's father and are an exemplary prescription for those of us left behind.

To be sure, it is with sadness when I say that I will miss Sushil. He was a good and decent man…

My Earliest memory and the one I remember the best is of my visit to Washington in the early 70’s when he was working for a news paper. Sushil and Cleo were a young couple, full of energy, great hospitality and a joy to spend time with. They worked hard, raised a family and built successful careers. There was much there to learn from and much we profited from. A remarkable young man who came as an immigrant with nothing and created so much. May God give him the peace and serenity he so richly deserves. 

Sushil was like a dad to us when we were first married and living in Alexandria.  He and Cleo invited us to dinner frequently, and always for any holiday.  He was generous and kind, and we are so grateful to him for bringing us into his life with such an open heart.  He came to our wedding party in Salt Lake, and then to India.  Even after we moved to Salt Lake, he and Cleo would send birthday cards to our children, and to us.  We have so enjoyed the friendship with his children, and are grateful that he helped to build that bond.  He will be missed. 💗

Hi I visited  in Fairfax Hospital once and with Jerry and Silvia at the house another.  I am the one dragging an oxygen tank.  We all went to therapy together.  My thoughts and prayers are with you as we all miss Sushil for his good humor, wit, and great smile.  I am sorry I cannot be with you on Saturday but my condition at this time prevents it.  I will be with you in spirit.

I remember Sushil fondly.  We worked together at the Bank for many years.  He traveled to my home state of Maine one summer and later told stories over the years of that visit.  Sushil was a family man and a talented professional.  We remained in touch long after our career paths diverged.  Always a smile or a joke, he was a wonderful man.  I will miss him.

Spent the most wonderful evening with dadaji in 2019. 

Every day, on the occasion of walking our dog, Katie, we would stop and talk with Sushil. We live across the street and a few doors down on magic West Mason Ave. Katie was always treated with 2 cookies, so no matter what…a stop at that house was a must!
I always greeted him with Namaste, folded hands, bowed head in respect for his rich heritage and culture. “Kasey-Hay?” "A-Chai." "Teak-A”  followed by laughter and conversations of current health issues, crazy politics and occasional juicy neighborhood gossip. 
Having spent many years living in the Middle East and travelling often to India, I had some appreciation of how unique Sushil was and how also he represented the best of the kind of quiet kindness and spiritual nature of most of the Indians I have met.

My wife, Lynn and I shared several meals out with Sushil and Cleo, always at Indian or Nepalese restaurants, where I could watch him interacting with servers in his native language and capitalizing on his well-travelled experience with food. 

I will remember Sushil’s kindness, his love of children and animals and his sweet, smiling face. It will never be easy to walk past his house again, and Katie still sits daily at his porch steps….waiting for her cookies.

Our family is so sad at the loss of such a special presence on our block.  Shil was a beloved neighbor for over 20 years and is missed every time we drive up and down the street.  Our favorite memory of him are the delicious (and spicy) samosas he made for the block party each year.  We will always remember him!

Shil was a very good friend of mine and I will miss him very much. I have so many memories that I can't remember them all, and now  that he is gone all I have is memories. Shil, I know someday we will meet again and I imagine you will have a list of projects for me that you will need help with, and that will be just fine with me. You always welcomed me like a brother and I will miss you like a brother.

I am writing with heavy heart that my cousin, my friend, is no more in this world.  On that mysterious day I  talked to Sushil for 15 minutes  and he promised to visit India this year.  He said he would stay with for 15 days.  That day will never come because  10 hours later I read a massage that shusheel is no more, he suddenly  passed away.  I forwarded his late farther’s pictures to him and he was feeling  so grateful and thankful for that. I felt he was waiting for these  pictures to meet his father. I am 85, I lost my younger brother, friend good, a gentlemen.  I will miss him.

Dearest Family, 
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Sushil.  I don't have a single family gathering memory from Grandmommy and Grandaddy's house that doesn't include his gentle humor and kind concern toward me (many laughs around the buffet table).  While it can be so hard to let go of those we love, I hope your fond memories of him and his worldly lessons to you will provide you comfort.  I am thinking of you all, and remembering your dad's kind heart.

I had the pleasure meeting Sushil  in Feb. 2010 at the Alexandria Hospital Cardio Rehab. We eventually  became friends and I was invited to have  lunch with him and his friends from the rehab center.   We both were in the restaurant business, so had something to talk about besides sports. He was one of the nicest guy and we will miss him dearly.

It seems just yesterday that I, along with my wife Dona moved just two doors down from "Shell" and Cleo. This was the winter of 1984. Shell was the first neighbor on the block to welcome us into the neighborhood and would be the one person that Dona could count on to check on her when I traveled out of the country work. Over the years people would come and go from the neighborhood. but I would always return to check on my good friend Shell and Cleo. We became scribes in our own right, and became experts on the body politic; although Cleo never thought that we were. I've know Shell for 37 years and what I remember most about him is as follows: He kept his own counsel, I never heard him raise his voice in anger, I never knew him to ask for any favor and I never knew him to say no to any request of him. He was a good, sweet, gentle and decent man.  I will miss our talks but most of all I will miss him

My grandpa was always someone who could brighten up my mood. No matter what we talked about, there was always mutual love, respect, and kindness in his heart. I always loved getting his big hugs and standing next to him with my arm around his shoulder, knowing that he loved me dearly and was so proud of me. Im so glad i shared such moments with my grandpa, and I will forever feel his hugs when I need them most. 

My mother met Sushil at cardiac rehab at Alexandria Hospital over 20 years ago - they became instant friends as Sushil welcomed her into his wonderful circle of friends he had met there, affectionately calling themselves the “breakfast club.”   Sushil brought so much fun and joy to this group as they met at various restaurants around town (all trying to eat ‘heart smart’) - my mother especially enjoyed when Cleo would join in, too!  Sushil left us too early and will forever be in our hearts.  Love to the Sharma family.

Mom always complained about how Dad disappeared for hours on end and never told her where he was going.  It turned out he was spending time with the neighbors - helping them, hanging out with them, getting to know their families - just being king of the block.  No wonder he never wanted to leave.  He was too important to West Mason Ave.  
It is good to know how beloved he is and will be missed for years to come.  Thank you all for helping Dad feel the love.

Many of my best family memories include the broad smile and gentle hug that Sushil always gave.  Though he could not stay with us in this world, he left us part of him by way of Neal, Andy and Valerie.  Each  of his children have his values and integrity.  and thus  Sushil does live on through his children.. 

That man is a success—who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.

Elisa and I are going to miss our wonderful loving friend. We shared many wonderful times together and he was the person we all should strive to be. To me he was like a father, I knew him longer than I knew my own dad and also closer than my own father. To his wife, his children and grandchildren, how blessed you were to have such a good wonderful man who loved you all so very much. All of us who knew him were better because of his loving caring nature and gentleness. We should all honor him and his family by continuing what Sushil did best, LOVE.
