Bill was born on February 11, 1938 in Far Rockaway, New York and proudly attended St. Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and Brooklyn Prep High School. He enjoyed life-long friendships with many of his high school friends and looked forward to their reunions in New York. He went on to attend the University of Virginia and earned his M.B.A. from the City University of New York. After working in finance in New York for many years, Bill bought Winder Rug Mills and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. He later managed his own investments and loved researching companies.
Bill was a life-long learner and whether it was learning another language or studying a particular area of history, he took up the project with gusto. His curiosity extended to a love of travel. From National Parks in the United States to European cities, he cherished the adventures he had with his wife, daughter Maria Mahon McDonald, and other family members and friends. He enjoyed collecting art on his travels. In his leisure time, he was always ready for a good game of tennis.
Bill was a man of deep faith and a daily communicant for much of his life. He had a special devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague after witnessing and participating in a procession dedicated to the Infant on a trip to Prague.
Most of all, Bill will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Bill and Inge found joy in making their home a welcoming place for family and friends. Until the very end, he was always concerned about the well-being of Inge and family.
He officiated many Barbie weddings and served as an expert cruise director for many doll and stuffie expeditions over the years to the delight of his daughter. He saw the joy in a spontaneous day off school for a surprise adventure, passed on his love of tennis to Maria, and was known to be a generous host and lively presence at dinners with Maria’s friends from childhood to later in South Bend, New York, and Washington, DC.
Bill and Inge moved to Alexandria when his grandsons, James (9) and Charlie (7) were born, and they were the great joys of his life. He was always ready for a game of catch or hide and seek and kept a stash of chocolates ready for them at all times.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, the late Richard and Mae Mahon; and his older brother, Richard Mahon. In addition to his wife Inge and daughter Maria, he is survived by his son-in-law Michael McDonald; and his grandsons, James and Charlie, all of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Shields, of Larchmont, New York.
A funeral Mass will be held on May 15, 2026 at 10:30am at the Basilica of St. Mary in Old Town, Alexandria. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in his name to the Basilica School of St. Mary to support their arts programs (400 Green Street, Alexandria, VA 22314).
