Betty was born February 17, 1925 to Clemma (Fry) Milligan Lewis and Samuel Hughey Milligan in Lawrenceville, IL. She married Elmer Floyd Smith on June 8, 1945 in Orio, at the parsonage of the Wabash Presbyterian Church. Their wedding was officiated by the Reverend J. E. Moyers.
Betty was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, Mt. Carmel, IL. Her life experiences were varied, and included working in the ship yards at Evansville, IN during WW II as a riveter, being a foster parent and she also was a member of the work crew that volunteered with the Samaritan’s Purse Organization following the Hurricane Andrew disaster along the Florida coastline. Betty will be remembered for her many crafting projects, most especially her quilting and ceramic pieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, Ron Smith.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Ernestine (James) Barger of Allendale, IL, daughter-in-law, Kathy Smith of Champaign, IL, sister, Ruth (Robert) Buchanan of Mt. Carmel, IL, five grandchildren: Adrienne (Mike) Robinson of Evansville, IN, Elizabeth (Eric Kenny) Lawalin of Indianapolis, IN, Steve Barger of Allendale, IL, Samuel (Leighann) Smith of Champaign, IL, Bill Nicol of Indianapolis, IN, and three great-grandchildren: Joseph and Norah Robinson and Ian Paul Nicol.
A Celebration of Life for Betty J. Smith will held at 2 PM on Friday, January 20, 2012 at Ingram Funeral Home in Allendale, IL. Burial to follow at the Allendale Cemetery
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Allendale Ruritan Club Roof Fund or the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ Youth Program, Mt. Carmel, IL.
