Her life was well lived and she was well loved! The Lord called her home, with her family by her side, on Sunday, July 28th, 2019 in her 89th year.
This gentle, loving, caring, and wonderful woman has left a permanent mark etched on our hearts and will be supremely missed by her husband and best friend of 61 years, Ramón, as well as her children Zulma Weeks, Ramón “Billy” (Rosana), and Teresa Abney (Bo).
Family love and Christian faith are the legacy of Lucy’s life. She was proud and honored to be the Matriarch, Abuelita, and Titi to our large family. She was a vital presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was a dedicated Abuela to Andrea (Andy), Chrissy, Veronica, Alex (Alessandra), Rachael (James), Libby, Deanna, Kim, Ashley, and David. She cherished her role of Abuelita to her great-grandsons Ian, Beau, Noah, and Grayson. In addition to her immediate family, Lucy is survived by her brothers Alberto “Nino” and Osvaldo “Baldo”, as well as many precious nieces and nephews.
Lucy was born in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, studied Education at Catholic University of Santa María in Ponce, worked as a schoolteacher, and later met and married Ramón in San Antonio, Texas, in 1958. Lucy spent her married life as a hardworking, faithful US Air Force wife and mother. Her role as a military wife afforded her the opportunity and challenges to live in and travel throughout Europe and in several locations in the US. Her time in Colorado Springs, while the darkest due to the loss of her beloved Bertito, was also the time in which she was blessed to meet life-long friends John and Barb Ezell. She always felt that their friendship and support was timely and heaven-sent.
Lucy is preceded in death by her sons, Alberto José “Bertito” (13y) and Alberto Rafael (1mo), parents Trinidad and Gertrudis, brothers Rafael “Fales”, Manuel, and Antonio “Toño”, and sisters María “Pepa”, Carmen, Hilda, and Mercedes “Mechi”. She is also preceded in death by her beloved son-in-law Ernie Weeks.
The family would like to thank all the health care professionals for their great care in the last years of Lucy’s life. Most special to her were Rosin “Tata” and Miguelina, who began as caregivers and evolved into the most loving of friends and daughters. We are also sincerely grateful to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Hospice of the Comforter who lovingly cared for her and comforted us in her last days.
Lucy will be forever remembered for her beautiful smile, gentle eyes, caring heart, warm embrace, and unconditional love. Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate her life and find comfort knowing that she is in heaven with her Lord watching over us until we are together again.
Lucy will be laid to rest alongside her two sons at the Puerto Rico National Cemetery.
