Dawn Joy Bookbinder

Dawn was born on July 9, 1949, in San Diego, California. She grew up in a military family as the daughter of a career Navy father. Alongside her twin brother, Darwin, older sister, Darlene, and younger brother, Dale, affectionately known as Jimmy, Dawn experienced life in many places, including Hawaii, Georgia, and Tennessee, before her family eventually settled in Sanford, Florida.

After attending Seminole High School and later Rollins College, Dawn began building a life defined by determination, compassion, and an adventurous spirit. She loved tennis and snow skiing and embraced every opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.

Forty-two years ago, Dawn married the love of her life, Ed Bookbinder. Together they built not only a marriage filled with love and partnership but also a successful video production company.

Dawn became a true pioneer in her profession, earning the distinction of being the first woman in Central Florida to film legal depositions and compulsory medical examinations. Her professionalism, work ethic, and dedication earned the respect of colleagues throughout the legal community.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dawn had a generous heart. She deeply loved her dogs and devoted countless hours working with them as therapy dogs in local hospitals, bringing comfort, companionship, and smiles to patients when they needed it most.

Dawn treasured her friendships. She loved cruising, gathering with friends, sharing meals, and creating lasting memories. Her home in Longwood, where she lived for more than 30 years, was a place of warmth, laughter, and hospitality. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome and valued.

Family meant everything to Dawn. She loved and cherished her extended family, including Lori and Pete, Leigh and Terry, Brad and Jess, and her grandchildren Josh, Kyle, Ian, Lyla, Bentley, Indy, Greyson, and Spencer. She took great joy in watching her family grow and celebrating their accomplishments.

In 2023, Dawn was diagnosed with lung cancer. What followed was a difficult journey of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Yet through every challenge, Dawn demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience. She faced her illness with determination, grace, and an unwavering spirit. She never stopped fighting, never stopped caring for those around her, and never lost her ability to find joy in life.

One of those joyful moments came in 2026 when she was surprised with a 75th birthday celebration attended by more than 50 friends and family members. It was a beautiful testament to the many lives she had touched and the deep love that surrounded her.

Dawn’s life was a life well lived. She was a loving wife, a devoted family member, a loyal friend, a trailblazer in her profession, and a source of comfort and kindness to countless people. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of love, perseverance, generosity, and friendship.

Though she is no longer with us, Dawn’s spirit lives on in the memories we share, the lives she touched, and the love she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
