Dottie was born on July 20, 1942 in Foley, FL, a small, panhandle lumber town. She spent time on her grandparents’ farm and, later in life, would fondly recall childhood memories of rural Southern living. She became a big sister to Debbie at fourteen.
As a young woman, she met the love-of-her-life, Roy Laffick. Early in their courtship, Roy took her to a showing of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s," a film and soundtrack she would treasure throughout her life. They fell head-over-heels in love and soon were married in Leesburg.
Two years later, they welcomed Roy Todd Laffick, her beloved only child. She was the best kind of mom—loving, hands-on, and always there. Family was everything to Dottie and her love for Todd extended to the people in his life. During Todd’s childhood, she warmly welcomed his friends into their home which became the neighborhood hangout.
When Todd married his wife Maureen, Dottie fully embraced her as a daughter. She loved being a grandmother to their children, Jennifer and Kevin, who affectionately called her “Nanny.” She made every playdate an adventure and spoiled them in love through her thoughtful gifts and gourmet meals—often using ingredients from her cherished garden. As they grew up, Dottie encouraged Jennifer and Kevin to dream big and stay curious.
Dottie was fiercely independent and a life-long learner, always seeking to better herself by traveling the world, staying on top of current affairs, and reading. Whether it be on the screen or in the pages, she loved a good story, especially tales of romance and love. Dottie’s creativity was boundless and she enjoyed being crafty through scrapbooking. She felt at home on the beach and loved collecting seashells. She had a sharp eye for beauty and fashion and cultivated a sophisticated style in her home and wardrobe. Everything Dottie touched was special, as she had a unique talent for transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Roy Laffick, and sister, Debra Lee Breedlove. She is survived by her son Todd, daughter-in-law Maureen, grandchildren Jennifer and Kevin, sister-in-law Gayle, and nieces Gena and Tisha.
