Decedent Information: Douglas Bak, who went by “Doug”, moved from Feasterville, Pennsylvania to Orlando at age 5. Longwood, Florida is where he called home for the past 15 years.
Family: Mother is Lois Bak born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Father was Thomas Bak, born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. In addition to his brother and sister, Doug also had 1 niece and 4 nephews.
Past: Doug graduated from the University of Phoenix with honors, Summa Cum Laude. He was an avid scuba diver and enjoyed diving with his two boys William and Robby. He loved all sports. He was a die-hard Miami Dolphins fan his whole life and loved his Florida State Seminoles. His two Hockey teams were the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Orlando Solar Bears. As for basketball, he liked the Orlando Magic. He loved gambling, having won $10,000 twice on scratch-offs, and got a once in a lifetime “Royal Flush” while playing Three Card Poker in Casino Royale on a cruise a few years ago. He enjoyed Three Card Poker, Mississippi Stud, Criss Cross and Texas Hold-em with the occasional slot play. He also loved golf. In his younger years, he played softball, was in various bowling leagues, he shot pool and played darts.
Profession/Occupation: Doug’s career in Information Technology spanned over thirty-five years, with the last 24 years at CuraScript, (a subsidiary of Cigna) where he was a Senior Software Architect. Prior to entering the IT space, Doug worked at various gas stations owned by his father as a mechanic. He also worked as a roofer, electrician’s apprentice and various other jobs.
The “other” job: Doug was heavily involved with all three children in their various extracurricular activities. He was part of the “band boosters” for Robby when he was in the “Silver Regiment” band program at Lake Howell High School. He helped build props, he worked concessions at the Amway Arena and was a chaperone for competitions and performances at HS football games. He consistently sold the most chocolate bars of any student for the band fundraiser. He was a “prop dad” for Kylie during her 8 years as a competitive dancer. He made seemingly impossible “props” possible. He was at every single competition, including out of state national competitions where we traveled to NYC, NY, PA, RI, NJ, OH. He was William’s biggest fan and supporter of his Taekwondo, from age 7 to the present. Doug was at every single testing, competition, summit, tournament cheering William on. He proudly supported William throughout his Taekwondo journey from White Belt to 3rd Dan Black Belt. He was also the all time “homework helper” for all of the kids, having such patience and ability to simplify things so they could understand. He was a real-life MacGyver, handy-man, electronics and technology expert. He helped his son in law Danny with his car on various occasions, and helped Kylie when her car was stranded far from her house and couldn’t drive it. He fixed it within a day of her telling him about it. He basically helped anyone and everyone with everything and anything.
Community: He would volunteer his time and skills to help build up any place his children were associated with. From helping to remodel and update the dance studio Kylie attended to helping remodel, update, and move locations of the Taekwondo Dojangs William has been associated with; he was always willing to do what he could to improve and enhance the experience of the dance and martial arts communities.
What made Doug unique: Doug was the most selfless human being I have ever known. He always put the needs of others in front of his own. He had the attitude of “let’s just get it done.” He was quietly dependable because he would always take care of things without making a big fuss about it or needing recognition. Anyone who knew him would say that he was kind, caring, hard-working and incredibly generous. He also had a great sense of humor and a flare for sarcasm. He was also very adventurous/active, loved scuba diving, climbing rock walls, traveling on boats, and going on roller coasters. He was quite the thrill seeker.
Others would likely say that Doug was always willing to help others. He would go out of his way to make other people’s lives better. Anything he could do to help, he was willing to do, and he wouldn’t take “no” for an answer.
His greatest legacy was his family. He loved being a good husband, father, grandfather, and overall provider; passing on what he learned from his mom and dad and building upon that to have a positive impact. He was so proud of the amazing young man William is becoming. He was also incredibly proud of Robby and Kylie. Doug came into their lives during a challenging time in their lives. He took them under his wing and loved them unconditionally – even through their tough teenage years, he never gave up on them. He was so proud of how well they are doing now. He was also incredibly proud of his granddaughter Ariah. To her, he felt like home. He always greeted her the same way—with a warm “hi,” followed by picking her up, wrapping her in a big hug, and letting her know he had missed her.
Quotes: “I’ll take care of it”, “If I remember rightly”, “well, you better figure it out”, “are you writing a book? Skip this chapter”, “I’m up for the challenge”, "Come on Guys!" (watching sports).
Three words that sum up his life: Devoted, Resourceful, Selfless
