Eleanor C. Johnson (nee Gormley) was born on December 27, 1937 in Manhattan, New York, to Agnes and Owen T. Gormley. She grew up in The Bronx with her two brothers, Owen C. and James C. Eleanor graduated high school from St. Jean Baptiste High School, New York. Later, she would move with her family to Waldwick, New Jersey. Eleanor would work a few years in the New York City office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Eleanor met the love of her life, John B. Johnson (who went by Bert) in a chorus group together at St. Luke Catholic Church, Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. They would later marry at that same church on September 22, 1962. Eleanor and Bert started off their life together with Bert serving in the US Air Force. Their one son, Bertram John (also would go by Bert), was born on August 31, 1966, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Soon afterward, Bert (husband) would serve a year in Vietnam. The family lived around the United States at various Air Force bases located in California, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Louisiana, and two years in the Philippines. Bert retired from the Air Force in 1981, and the family moved to the Orlando area to be closer to family.
She was active in her Catholic faith attending St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Altamonte Springs. She acted as an Eucharistic Minister, member of St. Vincent de Paul Woman's Circle (which was treasurer for a number of years), and a member of the Council of Catholic Women (CCW).
Eleanor loved to do many things, including making various crafts. She often made things as gifts for Christmas or birthdays for her family and friends and to donate to St. Mary Magdalen's Fall Festival where St. Vincent de Paul Circle would help raise money for the Church. She also would make Boy Scout scarves for various events or troops. She sang as a soprano with the Messiah Choral Society for many years at the Bob Carr Theater in downtown Orlando.
Scouting, one of Eleanor's biggest loves, began the early 1970s when her son was in Cub Scouts. She would be involved with it wherever they moved to on through her later years living in Orlando. She even worked for a period of time as the Central Florida Council Registrar in Orlando. But her greatest love in scouting was working with boys and young men as they progressed from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. She helped many through the process towards earning the rank of Eagle Scout, one of which was her son. She also loved working with Catholic Scouts at many Troops. She received many honors volunteering for Scouting, one of which was The Silver Beaver Award in 1989 for her distinguished service to youth.
Eleanor was loved by her family and friends, who will miss her very dearly but know they will be with her in the future.
