September 12, 1941 – April 30, 2021
George Berger, 79, of Longwood, Florida, passed away on April 30, 2021. He was born in Szolnok, Hungary, on September 12, 1941, to the late Imré Goldmann (killed in the Holocaust) and Barbara Halász. Barbara later re-married Eugene (Jenő) Berger, who adopted George as his son in 1954.
George was a proud American. He and his parents fled Communist Hungary in 1957 for the United States, where they settled in New York City. After he finished school and obtained U.S. citizenship, he enlisted in the US. Army. While on base, he heard soldiers talking about a fellow soldier named “Charlie Brown”. George, who was still mastering English, found this to be literally unbelievable, and he tracked down Charlie to see if there really was a soldier named after the cartoon character. The two became good friends, and Charlie later introduced George to his cousin Sharon from back home in Canton, Ohio. George and Sharon fell in love and married in Canton on the Fourth of July, 1965. They started their lifelong journey together in New York City and moved to Orlando in 1972.
The union produced three sons: Emery, a computer science professor at the University of Massachusetts and Ryan, who works in Information Technology, both born in New York City; and Doug, who is the CEO of Remixed: The Branding Agency, born in Orlando. Over the years, the family has grown to include three daughters-in-law (Elayne, Marina, and Kimberly), and six grandchildren (Sophia and Benjamin, Leah and James, and Elizabeth and Dylan).
George‘s many entrepreneurial ventures ranged widely, from shoe sales to vending to organizing and promoting youth sports, especially soccer.
Rabbi Yanky Majesky of Chabad-Lubavitch of North Orlando will be the officiant at the funeral services to be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 3, 2021 at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home East Altamonte Chapel, 994 E.
