Some people leave memories. Others leave a legacy. Giota Thanos left both, along with an extraordinary impact on countless lives that will be felt for generations.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, our beloved Giota passed away after a courageous battle. Though she fought with remarkable strength and determination, her time with us was far too short. The world lost a true force of nature.
Born in Porto Rafti, Greece, Giota was the third of five children born to Yianni and Eleni. At just 18 years old, she made the journey to America, where she met the love of her life, Spiro Thanos. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, hard work, and family. Spiro preceded her in death on December 6, 2020, and we find comfort in believing they are together once again.
Giota and Spiro were blessed with four children: Maria(Tom), followed by twins Dino (Tara) and Athena (the late Pasquale) just 14 months later, and nearly six years afterward, their youngest, Peneo(Jason). Raising three little ones with limited English was no small feat, and Giota would often laugh, recalling, “When the babies cried, I cried!”
Never one to sit still, Giota possessed an extraordinary work ethic and seemingly endless energy. She worked alongside her sister in a bridal shop before moving on to a hospital, where her dedication earned her repeated Employee of the Month honors and ultimately Employee of the Year.
In October 1988, Giota and Spiro moved their family to Orlando, Florida, leaving behind their extended family to pursue a new opportunity. It was here that Omega Deli became far more than a family restaurant. It became an Orlando institution, a gathering place, and for countless people, a second home.
Omega Deli may have been the name on the door, but Giota was its heart and soul. For decades, she welcomed people from every walk of life, turning customers into friends, and friends into family. No one ever left hungry, and rarely did anyone leave empty-handed. Her generosity was endless, her personality unforgettable, and her presence made Omega feel like home.
Giota was a force of nature. Funny, quick-witted, outspoken, and fiercely loving, she had a one-liner for everything and never hesitated to tell you exactly what she thought. Her advice was honest, her humor legendary, and her heart enormous. She possessed a strength and work ethic that seemed almost superhuman, remaining a constant presence at Omega Deli until just six weeks before her passing. Even at 80 years old, there was simply no slowing her down.
Walking was one of Giota’s greatest pleasures. She walked everywhere and often, not simply for exercise, but because she loved being out among people. A stroll through the neighborhood was never just a walk; it was an opportunity to stop, talk, laugh, and connect. Over the years, she also participated in numerous 5K events, but it was those everyday walks, greeting familiar faces and making new friends along the way, that truly reflected her spirit.
Above all, Giota’s greatest joy was her family. A devoted wife, loving mother, proud Yia Yia to her two granddaughters, Elena and Emma, and sister to Demetri(Angeliki), Venetia(the late Theofani), Dora(the late Demetri), and Spiro(Christina). She was the heart and soul of her family, yet her love extended far beyond those closest to her. To so many, she was simply “Mom,” the woman they could turn to for guidance, encouragement, honesty, and unconditional kindness.
Since her passing, one question has echoed among the countless people whose lives she touched: “Who is going to give me advice now?”
Together, Giota and Spiro were true icons, role models, and heroes to those fortunate enough to know them. They built more than a business or a family; they built a legacy of love, generosity, resilience, and community.
Eighty years was simply not enough. We will miss her unmistakable voice, her laughter, her endless one-liners, her honest advice, and the comfort of simply knowing she was there.
They simply don’t make women like Giota anymore.
There will never be another quite like her, but her extraordinary spirit will live on in every life she touched.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made In memory of Giota Thanos to GiGi's Playhouse in Chicago. See the link below.
