John Byrd Luce, 78, passed away on January 5, 2020 in Altamonte Springs, Florida from cancer. John was born on April 5, 1941 in Washington, D.C. and lived there throughout his childhood. As a youth he developed his love of sports and music that lasted a lifetime. He met his future wife, Sandra Pimper, when they both attended Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington D.C. John then attended Woodrow Wilson High School where he was a three-sport star in football, baseball and basketball. John also attended Bullis School and Montgomery College before transferring to Florida State University and graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing. Upon graduation from FSU, John relocated back to the D.C. area and began a very successful career that started in pharmaceutical sales and evolved into a prosperous career as a stockbroker. John married the aforementioned Sandra in September 1965, and the couple launched a journey together that lasted 54 happy years.
John’s success as a broker lead him to pursue the opportunity with a competing firm in Florida, which lead to John and Sandra moving their family south to Florida in the summer of 1973. As his brokerage career flourished, John dedicated himself to his true love, sports. He began coaching youth athletics as a volunteer in Seminole county for the next fifteen years. He coached three sports close to his heart: football, basketball and baseball. His commitment to youth sports and his drive and desire to positively influence hundreds of players he coached was a primary goal as a father and member of the community.
However, as much as John loved sports, his true passion was his family. His commitment to his wife, Sandra and his three sons: Andy, Bobby and Johnny. He was a great father, mentor, advisor and friend. John is survived by his wife, Sandra Luce of Altamonte Springs, FL; brother, Llewellyn Luce and his wife Mary Lou of Apollo Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Ann Mulhall of Ashburn, VA; sons, Andrew Luce of Akron, IN, Robert Luce of Las Vegas, NV, and John Luce of Boca Raton, FL; daughters-in-law Amy Luce of Akron, IN and Helen Luce of Boca Raton, FL; and grandchildren, Leonora Everson and her husband Austin of Marion, IN, Rachel Luce of Akron, IN, Ty Luce of Las Vegas, NV, and Alexandra and Ethan Luce of Boca Raton, FL.
