Laurel grew up on a berry farm in Indiana. This is where her love for gardening began. Always an avid gardener, active in clubs, and her church, Laurel was always looking for ways to serve. She graduated from high school in 1947 and moved to Chicago where she met Jack. They married in 1951 and had 10 children. Mom’s taxi service, always carpooling, taking her kids to all of their activities, and always willing to help neighbors.
When the family moved to Northbrook, IL Laurel was a fixture at Our Lady of the Brook Catholic Church. She volunteered and enjoyed performing in their variety shows. She always made sure her children attended church every week. Not an easy task! But Laurel could do this.
In 1980, Laurel and Jack relocated to Longwood, Florida where they immediately became active members of Church of the Annunciation. Laurel was known as the energizer bunny. She as a member of All Saints Circle for 45 years. She served as president of the Council of Catholic Women. She was an integral part of their charity work with Gramma’s Attic, Apopka Literacy League, Rummage Sales, flower sales, just to name a few.
While Laurel’s first devotion was to her family, she loved working at Texas Instruments after all of her children were school age. All of her life she led a busy, active life. She loved baking, especially at the holidays, welcoming neighbors, and gardening. Her yard was admired by many, and she was often honored with the Yard of the Month. She passed that love of gardening and flowers onto many of her children. Her smile and energetic presence will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, please consider following Laurel’s example of service, by volunteering for a cause dear to your heart, donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, planting some flowers, or just be kind in her name. Make the world a better place. God bless you as you keep her loved ones in your prayers. We know she is in Jesus’ loving arms.
