Lillian N. Smith-Mathis, of Monticello, Indiana, and later Miami, passed away peacefully at age 92 on July 10, 2018 in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on June 26, 1926 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, to the late Eula Mae Dupin and the late Ernst Otto Nacke. Lillian was a most loving wife, sister, godmother and friend. Anyone who ever met her in work or personal life, knew that she was caring, empathetic and exceptionally giving to everyone. She is survived by her second husband, David E. Mathis, and godson, Georg Kallert. As a female leader, she made an indelible contribution to Miami’s hospitality industry from 1948 – 1987 as the General Manager at the Tower & Columbus Hotels and while directing renovations to the Freedom Tower. In 1988, she challenged herself by moving to Blowing Rock, North Carolina to serve as Manager at the renowned Hound Ears Club, where she remained until her retirement in 2002. Lillian was widowed in 1986 upon the passing of her first husband, Robert H. Smith. Family and friends are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday, August 4th at 2:00 pm at Plymouth Congregational Church, 3429 Devon Rd, in Coconut Grove, Florida. Since Lillian was a strong believer in philanthropy, donations in her name to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
