The relationship between my sister, my mother and I has always been somewhat “complicated”. In recent years, she’s been striving to normalize relationships as her health has been in decline. I suppose you could say she chose on some level to see our collective past from a glass half full point of view. Had I not encountered a special soul; I might never have taken the opportunity to reflect on my past with my mother and pursue a relationship in the last several years. I know the she had the love of a very special man in her life in the person of her husband John.
She was an accomplished horseperson, and she was immersed in the sport of Western Pleasure riding as far back as I can remember. Later, in the latter part of the 1970’s she became involved in training dogs in the “Schutzhund” style with her first pit bull, Panda Bear. She became even more immersed in this sport and by the time I moved out of the house it was her life. It was from this passion that she completely changed her life.
So who was Marilyn Gladys Cerf Brubaker Thompson? That is a complicated picture that I believe no one individual has the full view of. I had my own perspective of her based on my own experiences with her. Gail had a similar but different perspective. Marilyn’s grandchildren have their own unique perspective as well. None of us ever had a real understanding of who she was and the environments that made her who she was. Despite a life of difficulties and obstacles I’m convinced that she did make some positive progress in the struggle we all have to learn and grow our souls.
One of the main tenants of Buddhism is that you can never judge a person unless you’ve lived their life. With that in mind I hope her spirit can find peace and understanding.
I would encourage all who visit here to share some of their insights, memories and feelings about Marilyn Thompson in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of a complex personality.
Rest well Marilyn
