Peter George Madson Sr.
February 12, 1937 – June 30, 2019
The Rev. Peter Madson passed away on June 30, 2019. He was born on February 12, 1937 in Lexington, Kentucky to The Very Rev. George Ralph Madson and Jane Dunbar Madson. As the son of an Episcopal priest, he lived in many cities in the South including Albany, GA and Dothan, AL. He was gifted both academically and musically - playing the piano by age 6 - and he completed his primary education at The Christ School in Asheville, NC. He was pursuing a degree in architecture at Auburn University when he received his calling to enter the priesthood. He got his bachelor's degree from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA and then went to General Theological Seminary in New York City for his formal training. His experiences of living in the Chelsea district of New York in the early 1960's were some of his favorite memories. For his Deaconate training, he was assigned to a small parish in Glen Cove, Long Island where he met the love of his life, Joan Ellen Gildersleeve. They were married in 1962 and moved to Florida. Over the years, he served in a variety of parishes throughout Florida as well as a parish in Blowing Rock, NC. In the late 70's, he left full-time parish work and returned to architecture, making a name for himself as a well-respected specification writer for many prominent firms in the Orlando area. A brilliant preacher and faithful Christian, he assisted in his later years at Christ Church in Longwood, then finally retiring at Church of the Resurrection in Longwood. After the death of his beloved Joanie in 2008, he moved to Orlando Lutheran Towers and embraced his elder years with his typical thirst for learning. He performed with the Downtowners vocal ensemble, including appearances at the Orlando Fringe Festival, and attended the UCF Life Learning Institute. Although his last few years were challenged with blindness and health complications, his sense of humor, deep faith and kindness made him beloved by both staff and residents alike. He is survived by his sister, Judi; his daughter, Deborah; his son Peter and daughter-in-law Tina; as well as his beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Elizabeth, Isabel, Asela, Rachel, and Matthew. Services will be held July 20,2019 at 11:00am at The Church of the Resurrection -251 East Lake Brantley Dr. Longwood FL with internment of ashes immediately following in the Memory Garden at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in honor, to the Bishop Gray Foundation - www.bgrfoundation.org.
