RJ (Rick) Boon

August 28, 1978May 11, 2020

Richard Boon, Jr. passed away suddenly on Monday, May 11th, 2020. He is survived by his father Richard Boon, Sr. (Dorine Boon), his mother, Ethel West, his daughter Serenity Brewster and his 3 siblings, Isaiah Boon, Alecia Boon, Nicholas Peoples, and other family and friends that are far too numerous to name. Richard worked in hospitality all his adult life. He had recently relocated to the Orlando area and was working at the Crowne Plaza Hotel as a night auditor. His chosen career is evidence of his desire to always be helpful and welcoming to the people surrounding him.

Music was an enormous part of his life and he had an amazing and memorable baritone voice. He was fortunate and honored to share his voice with several choruses including Orlando Gay Chorus, Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, and Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. To quote friend and fellow chorus member Eric Mask, “You were the largest man in the room, not only in stature, but your light, love and energy filled the room everywhere you went.”

The family is pained to not be able to offer a memorial service for this much-loved man but with the Covid19 restrictions, it cannot be accomplished at this time. The outpouring of love the family has received has been comforting in their time of grief and is very appreciated. It is the family’s hope to be able to offer a memorial service as soon as restrictions will allow.

I met Rick as a member of the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. His smile was infectious. What I remember about him most is his quick wit and sense of humor. He will be sorely missed!

RJ was a high school classmate and fellow chorister in the high school chorus. I remember a friendly, booming voice, full of life and character. I am sad to hear we have lost him too soon. My condolences to his family and close friends.

RJ was a part of our lives for many years. He was a big man who could look intimidating to those who didn't know him. But those who did know him knew that he was a gentle, kind man who was a loyal friend. He had a well developed sense of humor. But his real gift was his voice. We will be forever grateful to RJ for the love and loyalty he showed our daughter, Sarah, through good times and bad, and for the love he had for his daughter, Serenity. May she always feel that love as she moves on in her life journey. RJ was loved by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.

I am privileged to have been able to meet R.J and share laughter and pride after an OGC event. I know his mother, Ethel, and she was so proud of him and we all talked about how he was still sharing his gift of music with the world. He was a happy, bright and wonderful soul that I am so glad I was able to meet and so happy to call his mother friend, sister and fellow outloud family member! I am always here if you need me all you have to do is call and I am there.
