Bill was born in Orlando, Florida on July 1, 1942 and graduated from Edgewater High School in Orlando in 1960. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia for three years, including one year in dental school, before transferring to the University of Florida where he earned Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Finance degrees. He later earned an additional 30 hours of graduate accounting credits at Rollins College in Winter Park.
Bill worked as a National Bank Examiner for the U.S. Department of the Treasury for four years before accepting a teaching position at Seminole Community College (SCC; now Seminole State College) in Sanford in 1970. Bill worked at SCC for 35 years, primarily teaching accounting but also business math and personal finance. He was chairman of the Business and Information Technology Department for many years, as well as serving several terms on the faculty senate, including one year as president. In addition to his work at SCC, he occasionally worked for the Institute of Internal Auditors as an exam grader and supervisor. Bill also served on the board of the Seminole County Teachers Federal Credit Union, including several years as chairman.
On December 20, 1966, Bill married Arlen Louise Rybolt of Orlando, Florida. They were married for almost 58 years. Eventually settling in Altamonte Springs, they raised two sons: William Carey Rencher of Atlanta, Georgia and Daniel Howard Rencher of Orlando. During their marriage, they traveled along with their two sons all over the United States and Florida. Later when his sons were grown, he would take them on trips to various locations in the United States and Europe. Bill and Arlen especially enjoyed spending time at the beach in Ponce Inlet, Florida and attending summer Rybolt family reunions at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. After retirement, they took several car trips to visit family in the northeast as well as several stays at their beloved Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.
Bill was an active member of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Altamonte Springs for 50 years, serving as an elder, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, bookkeeper, chairman of the finance committee, member of the chancel and handbell choirs, and a twice member of the pastor nominating committee. After the closure of St. Mark’s in 2020, Bill and Arlen became members of Maitland Presbyterian Church.
In addition to travel, Bill had numerous other hobbies, including fishing, hunting, and woodworking. He used his creative talents to make fishing rods, duck carvings, and golf clubs for family and friends. He later made several pieces of furniture for his wife and children. He also took classical guitar lessons and played for several church services. In addition to being creative, he loved to play golf and watch sports. He had a particular passion for the University of Florida Gators, attending home football games for many years as a season ticket holder.
Bill was preceded in death by his father William Olliphant Rencher, his mother Mamie Taylor Rencher, his half-sister Kathleen Stewart, and his half-brother Robert Rencher. He is survived by his wife Arlen, his sons Bill and Daniel, his cousins Barbara Hooper, Bobby Rencher, and Betty Anne Alter, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
