The family will receive guests on Thursday, September 5 from 5pm to 7pm in the Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Director's funeral home located at 5400 Bell Ave in Amarillo. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 6 at 10am at the Paramount Baptist Church Sanctuary located at 3801 S. Western St in Amarillo; with Lance Herrington presiding. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Almeda Janet Holmes Chapman was born November 17, 1940 in Ralls, Texas to SL and Margrette Holmes. She lived in Floydada, TX where she graduated high school. She then moved to Amarillo and attended Amarillo College. While there, she met Gerald Eugene Chapman and they married July 12, 1959 in Amarillo.
They lived in Savannah, Georgia; Port Lavaca, Texas; Clovis, New Mexico; Houston, and Bryan, Texas before moving back to Amarillo in 1974 where they resided until her home-going on September 1, 2019.
Janet worked various jobs as a secretary, administrative assistant and other positions. While in Amarillo she worked at the Texas A&M experiment station and at WTAMU registrar's office.
Janet was a lifetime member of Paramount Baptist Church where she served in many capacities and loved teaching about the Lord. She taught all ages and in her later years taught older Women’s Sunday School as a fill-in.
She loved digging in the dirt and grew anything she could. She volunteered with the North Plains Iris Society where she gained vast knowledge of iris growing. She cultivated and cared for a wonderful, meticulously labeled iris garden.
As a creative person Janet tapped into her inner crafter and made things out of dried gourds. If you could think it, she could make it. The gourds usually showed her what they wanted to become, such as a snowman, a witch for Halloween, a swan, a Santa, and many others.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents S.L. & Margrette Holmes, brother Earl Holmes, grandson Jerry Dane Chapman, nephew Michael Holmes, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Survivors include husband, Gerald Chapman, son Stan Chapman and wife Judi of Hutto, son Dane Chapman and wife Rhonda of Hillsboro, grandchildren Stephanie Chapman of Hutto and Shay Pohlmann and husband Justin of Nacogdoches; great-grandchildren Ahmed, Chloe, Moh, Micah, and Jackson, a sister-in-law Carolyn Holmes of Amarillo, and numerous nieces and nephews.
