Charlene was born September 3, 1934, in Hamilton, Texas, to Barber Ross and Jamimah Jane Dutton. She married Paul Unger in 1960. Her family meant more to her than life itself. Always loving and caring, she thought of others before she thought of herself.
Charlene was known as an amazing quilter, seamstress, and cook. Her children would playfully argue over the last bit of dessert, which she didn’t mention was there until they were already stuffed from the meal. A godly woman, she imparted her wisdom to all with her favorite bit of advice: “If you are worrying, you are praying to the wrong God.”
Paul and Charlene brought their family to Amarillo and became members of Trinity Lutheran Church in 1965. At Trinity, she was a member of LWML, Altar Guild, and the Mountain Toppers group. She remained active in the church as she lovingly prepared baptismal napkins and helped organize meals for funerals and other gatherings. She was also a member of the Raggedy Ann, “Dirty Dozen” Quilt Guild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or your favorite charity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
She is survived by her husband Paul. She is also survived by her children, Jimmy McElroy, and wife Connie; Donny McElroy and wife Barbara; Carla Gaines and husband Joe; Karen Hays; Gary Unger and wife Toya; and Paula Edwards and husband Jonny; also, thirteen grandsons, five granddaughters, nine step-grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives.
Charlene’s family would like to thank the numerous care-givers who have lovingly cared for her during the last years, especially Dr. Brandon Holloway, Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Langley, and Dr. Agostini; also the Staff at BSA Hospital, Accolade Home Health Care, The Arbors, Bivins Rehab, and Hillside Heights.
