Carol June Uhrig Clark was born May 13, 1930 in Washburn, Texas to Patty Jackson Uhrig and David Uhrig. She died at the age of 93 on January 6, 2023 in BSA Hospital after a year of battling various illnesses. She graduated high school in the Las Angeles, California area in 1948. She met William Lamont "Monty" Clark, as a young US Army Corporal when her sister Donne' "dared" her to pick up a good looking hitchhiker. They were married September 20,1949 in Ft. Riley, Kansas three days before he graduated from Officer Candidate School as a Lieutenant.
As a brand new wife, she faced her first great challenge alone when Monty was deployed to his first combat tour stopping the Chinese invasion during the Korean conflict. Shortly after his return their first two children William Lamont Jr and Sharon Lea joined the family. With this as the beginning of their service, her time as a military wife would define her for the rest of her life.
While in the military, Carol traveled all over this country and also had the opportunity to travel much of Europe, including Germany, France, Italy and Austria. Two highlights of her life were reconnecting with her German roots from her father's side which made picking up the language and way of life easy for her children and the addition of their third child, Valerie Lynn. Sandwiched between two tours to Germany, while stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington, Monty taught her to shoot a .45 caliber pistol well enough to compete in various marksmanship competitions around Washington State and Vancouver, Canada.
After moving back to the US in 1965, they finished their military service at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma where she was called on to hold her family together while Monty served a remote tour back to Korea, followed by a transfer to Ft. Carson, Colorado when Monty returned to combat during Vietnam War and then retired from active duty.
Upon returning back to civilian life, Carol returned to her beloved Amarillo, Texas with her husband Monty and daughter, Valerie, where she served ou the remainder of her life heavily involved with Valerie's bands and orchestras from middle school through college; serving as a Docent for the Amarillo Art Museum, and as a member and leader of the Amarillo Home Arts Crafting Club. She was the catalyst for bringing the "Prayer Shawl Ministry" to the Panhandle.
She loved her family and is survived by her children Monty Jr of El Paso, Sharon and husband Al of Amarillo and Valerie of Farmers Branch, Texas. Grandchildren Monty III of Tomball, Texas and Shervaun and husband John Festervand. Great grandchildren John Jr and Audrey of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Carol's sister Dixie and husband Louie of Wildomar, California; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins all who made her life AMAZING!
She is preceded in death by her husband, Monty, sister Donne' and husband Wayne Oliver.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to allow out-of-town family and friends to attend. Time and location updates will be posted on this website. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Carol's name to either St.Jude's Children's Hospital or Tunnels To Towers Foundation.
