Clarence Leon Pope, 88 of Amarillo passed away November 10, 2013. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Arden Road Baptist Church with Dale Bigham officiating. Interment will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell. Clarence was born March 12, 1925 in Dutton, Alabama to Dewitt C. and Ollie Viola Pope. He was born and raised in Alabama. Clarence married the love of his life, Maydell Pope on September 28, 1946 in Lovington, New Mexico. They were married for 67 wonderful years. Clarence was a retired school teacher and part-time minister of music. Clarence was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Nathan Pope; 7 brothers; 3 sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Clarence is survived by his loving wife, Maydell Pope of Amarillo; son, Norman Pope and wife Judy of Armour, South Dakota; daughter, Nelva Swopes and husband Wayne of Amarillo; brothers, W.L. Pope of Rossville, Georgia and Calvin Pope of Niceville, Florida; grandchildren, Kevin Pope and wife Susan, Kaylee Weldon and husband Col. Tom Weldon, Jared Swopes and wife Megan, Melanie Lyons and husband Brancent, and Kendal Pope and wife Ginny; great-grandchildren, Jessica Pope, Kody Pope, Katie Lyons, Simon Swopes, Jacob Lyons, Brayden Hargrove and Jameson Swopes; also by numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggest memorials be sent to Gideon’s International.
