Debra Lynne Burks, lovingly known as Meme, passed away on October 28, 2025, surrounded by the people who adored her most — her family and friends who will forever remember her laugh, her kindness, and her incredible way of making even ordinary days feel special.
Born on December 16, 1952 in Amarillo, Texas to Robert and Imogene Wright. Debra grew up learning the values that would define her life: hard work, creativity, and love for family. She proudly earned her GED from Caprock High School and later went on to serve countless students through her work with AISD as a beloved cafeteria cook. If you were lucky enough to pass through her lunch line, you not only got a good meal — you got a smile and maybe even a free dinner roll. Debra married the love of her life, Jimmy Lee Burks, on May 12, 1984, and together they built a life full of laughter, warmth, and endless stories. Whether they were spending time outdoors fishing, cheering at the bowling alley, or tending to their garden, Debra brought joy and love into every space she touched. When she wasn’t cooking or working with her hands, she could often be found with a crochet hook or needle in hand, crafting beautiful pieces that somehow always ended up being gifts for others. Her creativity and care will live on in every stitch and bloom she left behind. Meme’s legacy is one of warmth, love and joy. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome — and a knack for reminding people that life, like a good recipe, is best when shared.
She is survived by her children, Tommy and Terri Monk, Teresa and Brent Cantwell, Johnny Monk, and stepdaughter Kim and Daniel Aims. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Brittani and Cody Masterson, Krysten and Wyatt Garton, Katlin Monk, Averi Monk, Jordan Monk, Hunter Cantwell, Jaxon Cantwell, Ryan French and Nathan French. Meme was also blessed with 9 great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy and laughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Imogene Wright, her brother Donald Wright, and her beloved husband, Jimmy Burks. Her family takes comfort in knowing that Debra is now reunited with Jimmy and her loved ones in heaven — likely organizing a heavenly bowling league or teaching the angels how to crochet.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
