Herbie was born December 20, 1950, to Herbert and Flossie Payne in Tulia. He graduated from Tulia High School in May, 1969. After 52 years, he has remained close friends with many of his classmates.
Herbie had a multitude of longtime friends and neighbors who were like family to him, Additionally, he had many "work buddies" who have visited him frequently during his long battle with cancer since 2012. They openly expressed to him how much they loved, respected and learned from him as a mentor to them--Iearning the intricacies of Welding and Fabrication. They and others that Herbie worked for during his career agree that "Herbie was the Best Fabricator/Welder in Texas"!!
Over the years, Herbie worked for various heavy truck and trailer businesses. In the early 1980's, he worked for Palo Duro Mechanics for a man he grew to love, Gerald Owens; at Hobbs Trailers, with another great friend, Todd Nelson; later for Pampa Diesel and Art's Equipment Sales, with another good friend, Art Hestwood; and eventually retired from Amarillo Truck Center (Freightliner Dealership), making many special friends. Herbie started his own business Payne's Welding Service which he continued to do until the past few months when his health failed. Many of his friends are probably unaware that Herbie became a butcher and also owned & operated Payne's Meat Market in Amarillo in the 1980's.
He also loved country western music and dancing. He and Sharon were quite the dancers. Herbie also loved fishing and photographing windmills. Herbie and Sharon loved going to his brother Charles and Donnah's lake home near Dallas at Cedar Creek Lake. They spent their last special vacation there Memorial Day Weekend.
Herbie's son Chad's favorite memory of his Dad was "That he always passionately pursued Jesus and encouraged everyone he knew to do the same"! AMEN!! The Family also wishes to give special thanks to their good friends, Art and Trena Hestwood.
