J. Don Jones

James Donald “Don” Jones of Amarillo, Texas, was born on January 5, 1937, in Dalhart, Texas, to Jewell and Mary Jones. His family later moved to Corpus Christi before settling in Amarillo, where Don graduated from Amarillo High School.

In December 1960, Don married Jayne Lively, and together they had two children, Derek and Deena.

Don was a hard worker who was never afraid to pursue what he wanted. He worked a variety of jobs while persistently seeking employment with the railroad. As Don often said, he “pestered them enough they just went ahead and hired him.” His persistence paid off, beginning a lifelong career with the Santa Fe Railroad.

Don’s career was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany for approximately three years. Following his voluntary discharge, he returned home and went right back to work for the railroad. To Don, railroading was much more than a job—it was a passion and, to those who knew him well, more like a hobby. He retired from being a conductor in December 2004 after more than 40 years of service.

Outside of the railroad, Don enjoyed snow skiing, fishing, and water rafting, often sharing those adventures with his good buddy, Carl. After retirement, he and his son, Derek, took many motorcycle trips together, traveling to places including Canada, the Tail of the Dragon, and Glacier National Park to name a few. These journeys created memories that will be treasured for years to come. Don also volunteered his time on the Handicap Parking Enforcement Patrol of the Amarillo Police Department. He enjoyed his time getting out, meeting other volunteers while supporting his community.

In November 2016, Don married Doris Taylor. Together, they enjoyed their retirement years and shared many adventures and simple joys. One special interest they shared was rescuing stray animals. Over the years, they opened their home and hearts to many dogs, including two especially beloved companions, Snickers and Cubby, who will always hold a special place in Don’s heart.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell and Mary Jones.

He is survived by his wife Doris; his son, Derek of Amarillo, TX; his daughter, Deena and her husband, Bart Schrick; and his grandchildren, Tye and Taylor Schrick all of Lawton, OK.

Anyone who knew Don knew how much he loved his time on the railroad. He was a strong-willed man who was not easily swayed and stood firmly by what he believed. Beneath that tough outer shell, however, was a softer side known and loved by those closest to him.

Don lived life on his own terms. He worked hard, loved his family, enjoyed his adventures, and never lost his passion for the railroad. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
