

James Charles (Mick) Kitchens passed away June 6, 2026. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 5-7 pm at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors. Graveside service will be Thursday at 2 PM at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Dr. Hal Rogers officiating.
Mick was born February 26, 1936, to Athon and Vera Kitchens in a small town in east Texas out of Lufkin, Texas. He attended school in Zavalla, Texas where he played basketball and received a scholarship to play basketball. He moved to Amarillo in 1960 and met the love of his life Helen Hickox and they married on September 25, 1960.
Even though they had no children, they were aunt and uncle and fill in parents to their nieces and nephews. Mick was a soft-spoken man with many talents, he was known as Mr. Fix it, but his best talent was being a barber. He received his barber license from West Texas Barber College. He was the proud owner of Fleetwood Barber Shop for many years. He retired in August 2014.
Mick’s favorite hobby was fishing, he was quite the fisherman, he loved fishing for walleye. Mick was a quiet man, but if you talked to him about fishing. He and Helen fished almost their entire marriage. They built a beautiful place at Lake Meredith with help from David and Karen Kee and Leisa Lester.
They spent many weekends there making beautiful memories until the Fritch Fire destroyed their home. Mick and Helen spend time fishing, RVing, square dancing and just simply living life.
Mick is also survived by nephews, Randy Hughes and his family, and Keith Martin and his family. Nieces, Karen Kee and husband David and Leisa Lester.
