

James Richard “Jim” Brokenbek, born on February 10, 1943 in Washington D.C., passed away gently on Sunday, October 3, 2021 in Amarillo, Texas.
Son of James Russell and Ethel Inez (née Easley) Brokenbek, Jim spent his childhood in Amarillo and after a stint at Amarillo College moved to Lubbock where he met his bride-to-be Janet Beth Kinard, whom he married on August 31, 1967. Completing a history degree at Texas Tech and being then ordained to the ministry by his home church, River Road Baptist, Jim relocated with his bride to Ft. Worth where he completed a Master of Divinity degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jim spent several years ministering to college students first at Sul Ross State in Alpine and then at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. After a time in professional photography and other media services, Jim returned to the ministry at Oakwood Baptist Church in Lubbock. He later spent a number of years working for the Texas Railroad Commission in Amarillo and during that time developed a deep love for the cowboy church movement, preaching at and supporting several churches in the Texas panhandle. A lifelong lover of history, Jim also cherished his affiliation with the Texas Plains Trail Region historical society, serving on their board of directors and often behind the camera.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife of 29 years. He is survived by his two sons, James Erik, daughter-in-law Rebeca and grandchildren Bethany Ruth and James Benjamin Brokenbek of Richardson, and Joshua Hampton of Amarillo and grandson Haydn Kenley Brokenbek of Denton; by brother Arthur of Amarillo, sister Nobél Davis of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and brother John of Decatur; and by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Many of you know Jim to have been a man of simple tastes and firm convictions. The family suggests that those who wish to honor his memory forgo flowers in favor of donations to the Texas Plains Trail Region historical society or to the Texas Baptist cowboy church organization, Western Heritage Ministries.
A memorial service for James Richard "Jim" will be held Friday, October 8, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St., Amarillo, Texas 79109.
