Larry D Houston

Larry will lie in state on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 from 5pm to 8pm in the Memorial Park Funeral Home located at 6969 Interstate 40 East. A graveside service is being held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 2pm in the Memorial Park Cemetery’s Garden of Mt. Aaron with Lt. Shane Chadwick, and Shane Whitten presiding. Larry was born in Canadian, TX on March 17, 1943. He proudly served the city of Amarillo for 33 years as a police officer, 15 of those years on the motorcycle squad. He worked many off-duty security jobs, including the Tri-State Fair and parade and FunFest. Larry retired in 1998 but went back to work as the Administrative Hearing Officer for the red-light traffic camera program in 2007 until 2019. Chances are if you appealed a red-light camera ticket in Amarillo, you got to meet Larry.

Larry, also, enjoyed doing volunteer work. He volunteered for Center City of Amarillo at High Noon on the Square for 3 years. His favorite “job” was playing Santa Claus, along with his cute elf, Alice, sparking the imagination of thousands of children for 9 years at Happy State Bank.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn & Peggy Houston and a sister, Glenda Thomas.

Larry leaves behind his loving wife, Alice Jean, of 57 years. He is also survived by a son, Daniel Alan and wife, Julie, a daughter Kelly Knight and husband, Jamie, and lastly, a daughter Shelly Kearns and her husband, William. They have 5 grandchildren: Anthony and Ryan Houston, Laura and Faith Kearns, and Megan Knight. The 6 great grandchildren are Eleanor, Elizabeth, Walter, Ronald and Grayson Houston and Rosalie Gavina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. The family would like to especially thank Lenny and Mary Barbarino for always being there whenever needed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
