

Lee “Poppy” Jones, 69 of Amarillo passed away December 24, 2012. Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel with Dr. Stan Coffey of The Church at Quail Creek officiating. Lee was born November 21, 1943 in Hollis, Oklahoma to Walter and Leta Faye Jones. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family moved to Amarillo when he was 3 days old for his father to go to work at Pantex. He went to Emerson Elementary School, Highland Park Junior High until the 8th grade, when he was crowned school favorite. He also went to Travis Junior High School in the 9th grade and Palo Duro High School. Travis Junior High School is where he met and started dating Gale Halcom. On June 9, 1962 Gale and Lee were married and were blessed with 2 children, Rocky Lee in 1963 and Rhonda Gale in 1965. Lee loved playing guitar and taught his 2 young brothers-in-law to play. He played in a country band with his dad. Lee and Gale, along with family and friends loved boating and camping at Buffalo Lake. Many wonderful memories were made during those times. During his work history, Lee did several years of laying carpet and tile with his father-in-law, Gene Halcom. He worked as a printing press operator, owned a gas station, and worked with his uncle in his air-conditioning business. In 1973 he went to work in the cement manufacturing business and worked in every phase of the business. Lee retired from there August of 2011 and in 2012 started consulting work for them. On June 9, 2012 Lee and Gale celebrated 50 wonderful years together. They are blessed with 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Judy Jones Borneman and brother, James “Jim” A. Jones. Lee is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gale Jones of Amarillo; son, Rocky Lee Jones of Austin; daughter, Rhonda Bloom of Canton, Georgia; granddaughters, Courtney Cooksey and Bailey Davis of Amarillo and Britney Sherley of Lubbock; grandsons, Brennan Lee Jones of Amarillo, and Billy and Andrew Lee Bloom both of Canton, Georgia; great-granddaughters, Carrie and Callie Cooksey of Amarillo and Aynsley Sherley of Lubbock; and great-grandsons, Colton Cooksey and Beau Davis both of Amarillo. The family suggests memorials be sent to the American Heart Association.
