Lucia Kurek Calhoun

Lucia Kurek Calhoun passed away on Wednesday, October 14th at her home with family.

Born in 1935 in a small village in Northeastern France, as a child she carried messages in a secret coat pocket for the Polish Resistance in France while the country was occupied by the Germans.

In her 20s she met and married an American serviceman, Glen A. Calhoun, with whom she moved to the Four Corners of New Mexico before finally coming to Amarillo in 1976.

She was passionate about knitting, crocheting, quilting and sewing - she won over 20 ribbons at the 2019 TriState Fair. Her loves were her family, travel, golf, painting, and fishing for anything that swam. She volunteered at Catholic Family Services for a number of years often providing French and Polish translation services which she spoke and wrote fluently.

Lucia was preceded in death by her husband Glen after 44 years of marriage, her parents Kosmon and Edwig Kurek, two brothers Alfred and Stansilaw Kurek as well as one granddaughter Phelicia Calhoun.

Her survivors include sons Ivan Calhoun of Fredericksburg, Phillip Calhoun of Atlanta (GA), Paul Calhoun and daughter Grazyna Calhoun both of Amarillo. Lucia proudly doted over 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

In France she is survived by her sister Sophie Opacki and her youngest brother Damien Kurek.

She was a great cook and shared many meals I'd never had before. Snails..she had me try snails. And then the beautiful trip to Santa Fe to watch the hot air balloons. Paul , I'm sending my prayers for you and your family.
