Maxine was baptized on April 24, 1949, at East Side Church of Christ. She graduated from Amarillo High School on May 30, 1955. On September 15, 1956, she married the love of her life, William “Bill” Grant Spiker. They shared a beautiful life together until his passing on October 17, 1988. Maxine built a successful career as a paralegal at Hinkle, Cox & Eaton Law Firm, where she worked for 25 years. She was blessed with two beautiful children, Gregory Max Spiker and Samantha Grant Lovett. Maxine was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan and loved the Texas Rangers, but perhaps nothing brought her more joy than the music of the “King of Country,” George Strait. She loved shopping and was always fashionably dressed in bright, vibrant colors. Her interests and collections reflected the joy and imagination she carried throughout her life. Maxine had a large collection of trains and was an avid Peanuts fan, with Snoopy as her favorite. She traveled to Disney World to see her favorite characters and especially loved Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. She also became a world traveler with her sister Janet, as the two enjoyed taking train rides and making memories together.
But above all, Maxine treasured her family. Some of her happiest moments were spent together playing games, with Go Fish being her favorite, working on puzzles, singing songs, telling stories, and simply sitting together in the sunshine. She often wrote poems and plays for family events and could always be counted on to get the family together for Christmas caroling. Her creativity, laughter, and love brought a special warmth to every family gathering.
Maxine is survived by her son, Max Spiker and his wife, Linda; her daughter, Samantha Lovett and her husband, Lonnie; and her longtime friend, Justin Heaton.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Charly Spiker and her mother, Denise Spiker; Dajanira Gonzalez and her husband, Jesus; Nancy Gonzalez and her husband, Sergio; Sergio Gonzalez and his wife, Daniela; Savanah Lovett; Shelton Lovett and his wife, Brooklyn; Sabrina and her husband, Christian; Landon Lovett; Jaydn Heaton; and Emma Heaton; as well as seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Gaynelle Thomas of Portales, New Mexico, and her sister, Karen Smitherman, and her husband, Bowmer, of Lubbock, Texas.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, R.T. and Routh Thomas; her beloved husband, William “Bill” Spiker; sisters; Mildred Thomas; Routh “Tiny” Jordan; Janet Pancake, brothers; Leroy Thomas; Howard Thomas, and Donald Thomas.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Odell at Amarillo Family Physicians for his loving care and for connecting the family with Cayla Cato and Shanna Gallegos of St. Michael’s Hospice. Their wonderful and compassionate care provided comfort and support during such a precious and difficult time. To our family, they truly were angels sent to us from Heaven.
Maxine was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and a treasured part of so many lives. Her laughter, creativity, faith, and love for her family will live on in the memories she created with those who knew and loved her.
Her family will carry her memory in their hearts, and the songs, stories, games, traditions, and laughter she shared will continue to bring them together for generations to come.
Rest peacefully, Maxine. You were deeply loved, and you will be forever missed.
