

Phillip Ray Wilfong, 90, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Graveside service will be held on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia with Dr. Hal Rogers officiating. A devoted husband, father, brother, veteran, and friend, Phillip lived a life marked by kindness, humility, hard work, and unwavering love for those closest to him.
Phillip was born on July 30, 1935, in Dodson to Roy and Mamie Wilfong. Raised with strong values of faith, dedication, and family, Phillip carried those principles throughout his entire life. He was known by those who loved him as a gentle and caring man whose quiet strength and generous heart touched everyone around him.
Phillip proudly served his country in the United States Army. He entered military service in 1958 and was honorably discharged as a Specialist Fourth Class (SP4) on April 8, 1960. During his time in the Army, Phillip contributed to the completion of the Redstone Rocket project, an accomplishment he took great pride in as part of America’s early advancements in space and missile technology. His service to his country reflected the same dedication and integrity that defined every aspect of his life.
Phillip met the love of his life, Shirley Ruland at church in 1956. Their love story became the foundation of a beautiful marriage that lasted nearly 68 years. They were united in marriage on June 23, 1958, and together built a life centered on love, family, and devotion. Through every joy and challenge, Phillip and Shirley remained steadfast partners and best friends.
Phillip found his greatest happiness in spending time with his family. He was a devoted father and a proud uncle, brother, and friend. Whether sharing stories, offering quiet advice, or simply being present for those he loved, Phillip made everyone feel valued and cared for. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mamie Wilfong; four sisters, Erma Lou Holloway, Loretta Rushin, Brenda Gaither, and Dolors Palmer; and one brother, Garry Wilfong.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Shirley Wilfong of Amarillo; his son, Larry Wilfong and wife Shelly of Lubbock; his daughter, Debra Wilfong of Amarillo; his brothers, Bill Wilfong and wife Laquita of Amarillo, and Ronnie Wilfong and wife Ka of Tulia; and his sister, Sharon Vickers and husband Sam of Lubbock. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.
Phillip’s life was one of service, love, and quiet strength. Though he will be greatly missed, his family finds comfort in knowing his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
