Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Pioneer Chapel. Arrangements by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell.
Richard was born, Nov. 5, 1943, in Dimmitt to Elbert and Joyce Newton. He lived most of his life in Amarillo. Richard graduated from Amarillo High School in 1962. He was active in many activities including the Amarillo Jaycees, where he served as president and in other offices during the 1960s and 1970s. Richard worked for the City of Amarillo while attending Amarillo College where he obtained his Associates in Applied Science degree. Richard was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Palo Duro Lodge 1239 and of the Scottish Rite. He then worked for Southwestern Public Service Company in their power plant drafting department and as a lighting specialist. Richard was the on-sight coordinator during the building of the Chase Tower. In 1976, he opened Amarillo Bar Equipment & Supply, otherwise known as ABE’S. He owned and operated several local bars and became a liquor license liaison, assisting owner’s obtain their licenses for their restaurants and bars.
Richard was known as the “gadget” man and was a self taught computer expert. He left behind many golfing buddies who will now have to make their own tee times, and we know he is putting and slicing around heaven as you read this obituary. He will be missed by many long time friends, golfing buddies, and business associates and especially his daughter, Kelly.
He was preceeded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Ann Heaton and his son Casey.
Survivors include, the most important person in his life, his daughter, Kelly Angel, and the mother of his children, Jeannette Angel and his two grand dogs, Mia, and Red.
There will be a gathering at the Pine Shed for friends after the memorial service.
