Visitation will take place on Monday, January 4, 2021 from 5pm to 7pm at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St in Amarillo, Texas. A graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 14200 Interstate 27 South, on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 10am with Rev. Kevin Deckard presiding. Ione Garrett was born in Abilene, Texas, on October 7, 1924 in the home of her parents, Blake H. and Laura J. (Newberry) Davis. She graduated from Wylie High School as valedictorian in 1942 and also attended McMurry College in Abilene and worked in the Taylor County Clerk’s office.
Ione married Buell Deuaine Garrett on May 18, 1945. She continued working until Deuaine returned from World War II. Ione and Deuaine moved to Amarillo, Texas, in the 1950s where he worked for General Electric and she was a homemaker. She enjoyed being a room mother and helping raise their son, Alan.
Ione sewed, baked, and shared her talents with her daughter-in-law, granddaughter, and many friends and neighbors. She enjoyed attending as many of her granddaughter’s soccer games as possible. She and Deuaine were married for over 50 years, until his death in 1996. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church at the time of her death.

Ione was preceded in death by her father Blake, mother Laura, husband Buell Deuaine, and stepfather W.I. Burton. Those left to cherish her memories are her son Alan W. Garrett and wife Rena of Portales, NM, and granddaughter Kaitlin E. Garrett of Las Cruces, NM.
