Sammie will lie in state on Monday, December 21, 2020 from 5pm to 7pm for viewing and visitation at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St in Amarillo. Funeral Services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 10am at Westview Christian Church, 6810 Hillside Rd with Mark Berry presiding. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Sammie was born January 20, 1925 in Lazarre, Texas to Carl Harris and Carrie Thomas Harris. Sammie was raised working on his family farm and in his dads General Store.
He served in the US Army from 1945 to 1947 and was stationed in Italy. He moved to Amarillo in 1949 where he was employed by the Texas Department of Transportation in the carpentry/sign shop department until his retirement in 1986.
He loved wood working, gardening, fishing, camping, playing Skip Bo and 42. He also played a mean game of ping pong. His favorite author was Louis Lamour and usually had at least one book open all the time.
He was a member of the Westview Christian Church where he served as an Elder. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Leone Lee Wright Harris of the home, brother John and wife Jean Harris of Amarillo, children Bill Harris of Amarillo, Sammy Harris and wife Teresa of Amarillo, Russell Harris of Los Angeles, CA, Gary Wright and wife Sherry of Vernon, TX, Roxie Berry and husband Mark of Ponca City, OK, Bobbi Livingston and husband Brad of Amarillo, 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. With many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Stanley Ray, siblings Buster Harris, Rex Harris, Norman Harris, Sue Holtman and Jack Harris.
Memorials can be made in honor of Sammie J. Harris Sr. to El Porvenir Christian Camp, the Hospice Association, or the charity of your choice.
