Sgt. Jim W. Hines was born October 8, 1932 in Vernon, TX to Marvin and Lillie Hines. He attended schools in Vernon and graduated from Vernon High School. In 1951, Jim and his best friend, Howard Henry joined the US Navy where he served aboard the USS Bausell DD 845 as a radio operator and was Honorably Discharged in July 1955. He married our mother, Linda Lou Keene, who was one of his sister’s best friends on June 16, 1956, and together they had two daughters. He joined the Amarillo Police Department in 1956 and served until 1974; in 1975 he joined the Potter County Sheriff's Department until 1995.
After our mother passed away in 1986, Dad’s life was being Sgt. Hines, and spending time with his girls at Lake Greenbelt. He enjoyed his weekends at “the lake”, cooking, fixing up the spot, fishing on the pier and evening rides on the pontoon boat. After retiring from the Potter County Sheriff’s office in 1995, he continued going to the lake but after more grandchildren were born it was nicer to spend time with them closer to home. Each grandchild and great-grandchild held a very special place in his heart. One of his favorite spots to hang-out was with Bo at Cherry Avenue Salvage Yard. To all the men and women he worked with in law enforcement he was “Sgt. Hines” but to us he was our Daddy and Papa, our patriarch. We miss him so much already but there is comfort in knowing that he is in the arms of the Lord and Linda is once again at his side. Graveside service will be Friday, August 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Pastor Jerry Davey officiating.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife Linda; a grandson Bradley Hastie; and brother Charles Hines.
He is survived by his daughters Angie Hastie and Missie Eakin; a sister Marva Jo Hinshaw; grandchildren Christi Ashley, Jenny Eakin and Gary Eakin; and great grandchildren Riley and Tylar Ashley. A very special friend Lonnie Ferril who he met in the police academy and became best friends along with numerous nieces and nephews.
