Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 17 in Memory Gardens Cemetery, I-27 & McCormick Road, Amarillo, TX. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors of Amarillo.
Mr. Roberts was born August 5, 1921, in Rosebud, Hardin County, New Mexico, to Warner and Elsie Roberts. Thane married June Roberts on February, 2, 1941, in Claude, TX.
Thane attended Buchanan Street School and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1939 where he was on the football team. He also attended Amarillo College. He worked in fabrication of building materials until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He served in the 25th Division Infantry in the Philippines and then in General McArthur’s Honor Guard in Manila and Tokyo until his honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal in 1946. His military awards included Expert Rifleman, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Award and the Bronze Star. He returned to his family and continued his work in the building materials industry in fabrication supervision, sales and customer relations until his retirement in 1983.
Thane enjoyed square dancing and couples dancing with his wife June in the early years of their marriage, participating in his sons’ activities such as Scouting and sports, and then golf and bowling on after retirement and into his late 80’s.
Thane was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Thelma and by his wife of 69 years, June. Survivors include his younger sister Cumo Cross of Connecticut; two sons, George M. Roberts and wife Mary Lynn of New Orleans and Pete W. Roberts and wife Sharon of Richmond, TX; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed.
