Billie Berry Died on June 21, 2019
She was born Thelma Eveline Light to Virgil Tice Light and Cora Sterns Light on July 2, 1916. Virgil wanted a son, so from the time she was conceived until 9/11/2002, she was always Billie. She was born in Lamar Colorado and lived there until 1934, when Virgil was hired as the Yard Boss at the Western stockyards in Amarillo Texas. Billie graduated from High School in Lamar so when she moved to Amarillo, she went to work for J. J. Newberry. She met James William Berry, Jr. while working in downtown Amarillo, and they married in 1939. James was inducted into the United States Army in 1942 and was sent to Europe. During the war, Billie returned to Amarillo and was employed as a Bookkeeper for Amarillo Livestock Auction Company. James and Billie had a son (Jimmy Dale Berry). James and Billie attended Church at Polk Street Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher from 1950 until 1966. Billie made the Berry’s home a welcoming place. They hosted two foreign exchange students, a nephew and two family friends during completion of their high schooling at Palo Duro.
Billie was proceeded in death by her father, Virgil Tice Light; her mother, Cora Sterns Light; Her Husband James William Berry, Jr., Her Sister Jessie Light Keel; and Her Brother, Jack Light. She is survived by her son, Jimmy Dale Berry of Mercedes, Texas; and her Daughter-in-law, Mary (Betsy) Elizabeth Berry; four grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren
There will be a graveside service for Billie at Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo at 2:00 PM on Tuesday July 2, 2019.
