Mr. Smith was a native of Seadrift, and a current resident of Amarillo. He was born March 9, 1919. He worked as a carpenter helper in the 1930s, before serving in World War II as a staff sergeant and an aircraft mechanic in the Pacific with the Army Air Force. Mr. Smith was a member of the local steamfitters union and worked for Flour and Bechtol Corp. before his retirement. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Smith and Mary Jane Gilbert Smith, and his wife, Ophelia Markham Smith, in 2003.
Survivors include many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
