In Loving Memory of Charles Ray Browning March 14, 1927 to September 7, 2013

Charles Ray Browning (“Chuck”), 86, of Orange, California, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 7, 2013. He was born March 14, 1927 in Elkins, West Virginia, to Moss and Evelyn Browning. He met his beautiful bride, Barbara, on a blind date while in college. They eloped three months later, beginning a 64-year legacy of a wonderful life together, with Christ and family at the center of all he did.

The legacy continues through his wife Barbara; his two daughters: Sandra Emilio (husband Daniel) and Debi Cooke (husband Bruce); 7 grandchildren: Joel (Flora), Jonathan (Allison), Justin (Denise), Melissa, Jarod (April), Sean, and Jamison; 8 great-grandchildren: Jakob, Everett, Genevieve, Evelyn, Katelyn, Elizabeth, Brayden and Noah; two nephews and their families: Danny (wife Debbie) and David (wife Jennifer) Godby of West Virginia as well as many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Charles served as an Army Tech Sergeant in Wiesbaden, Germany, and took part in the Nuremburg War Trials. He received his Bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University in 1951 and his Master’s degree from Drexel University in 1961. He worked as an electrical engineer for Ford Aerospace until retiring after 25 years of service.

He loved the Lord and was actively involved in church serving as President of American Baptist Men, on the National Board of Ministries, President of American Baptist Regional Board, and Comptroller for Children’s Baptist Home.

Charles was best known for his smile, teasing winks, tickles, tenor voice, love of cards/games/sports and was most often seen whistling tunes, organizing a baseball game with his grandchildren or offering a hand to those less fortunate.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many angels at Seasons Hospice for their loving care and support and the numerous ways they ministered to so many of us in the family over these past 10 months.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013, 3:00 p.m. at Beachpoint Church, 17415 Magnolia Street, Fountain Valley, CA. Memorial donations may be made to Seasons Hospice Foundation, 6400 Shafer Court, Suite 700, Rosemont, IL, 60018 or online at http://www.seasonsfoundation.org/page.aspx?pid=366.

Barbara: Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Sandi and Debi on the loss of your dear husband, father and our dear friend Chuck. He was a special person and a friend to everyone. He was helpful to anyone in need. He worked hard in the church and filled many positions and was a person you could count on to be there and help. We will forever remember our many years of Shanghai and of the 7 of us most of the time, 3 are gone now, Hazel, Claudia and Chuck and Eloise moved away. You were most loyal to a Bible Study in our home for years. And Barbara when we did dinners together at the church, you and Chuck brought the decorations and I did the food. Those are times we will always remember. We will miss Chuck. We are sorry we cannot be at the service tomorrow but will be thinking of you at 3 p.m. God bless you Barbara and all your lovely family.
Love, Max and Marilyn Dodson, Redlands, CA

Dear Barbara, Sandi, and Debi:

I remember Charles, not only as an uncle, but I know him by his great example as a Christian. It was so great that it affected both David and me all our lives. We discussed his church and all he did with the American Baptist men and this had a great impact on my life and has encouraged me as I go through my life's work. I fondly remember the time in 1974, when I came to LA with the St Louis Cardinals and stayed with you all, borrowing your car, and having Charles and Dan come watch me at Dodger Stadium. That was a most enjoyable time in my life, knowing how much Charles loved the Cardinals, and knowing he was in the stands watching me play. My dad said there were two people in this world. There were characters and men with character, and certainly Charles was the latter. All our love, Danny and Debbie.

Barbara, Sandi, and Debi:

I have always cherished the times our family got to spend together over the years. I specifically remember the time Charles and Barbara met Jennifer and me in Las Vegas the first year we were married. Charles took such care to see that we had a great time and Barbara brought us oranges from their trees. I hope to see all of you soon. Both of us send our love and prayers to you.
