Born on September 9, 1933, in Shreveport, Louisiana, the great granddaughter of a Caddo Indian Erin (Irving) Andrews. Virgie accepted God in 1951 as her savior and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She was raised in Caddo Parrish communities: Forbing, Allendale, and Cedar Grove. Virgie attended public school in Caddo Parrish: Central School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She was joined in marriage to Willie Reliford, Sr., and later divorced. Virgie worked as a maid in her early life and she attended Vocational Technical Center, in Louisiana, in the late 1960’s were she earned a Vocational Nurses degree. Virgie worked as a License Vocational Nurse for thirty nine years. She was employed by Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport, LA. In 1971 Virgie relocated to Los Angeles, Ca. continuing her nursing career, she worked at St. Vincent Medical Hospital, Hillhaven Nursing Center and Anaheim General Hospital. Virgie moved to Las Vegas but soon moved back to Southern CA after a few years, to be closer to her family.
Virgie joined Three in One Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in the early 1960’s, in Shreveport, LA. She was baptized and became an active member in the church. She and two of her very good friends in the church formed a singing group. They were named the, ‘Three in One Trios’. Those two members were twin sister and neighbors of Virgie. She recruited them to the church years prior. Virgie and the twins were like sisters. After Virgie relocated to Los Angeles from Shreveport, she became a member of United Revelation COGIC in Los Angeles. And later joined Holy Pilgrim Temple (COGIC) and was an active member. Virgie received her Missionary license and on Sundays, she taught adult Sunday school. She liked watching the Los Angeles Lakers play basketball, but most of all she loved reading her Bible writing down bible scriptures and talking about the Lord. She would always say, “you need to turn that television off and read your bible.’ Virgie was an excellent cook and she would make up her own recipes, which were fabulous.
Virgie is preceded in death by a son Olyn Jariet Reliford 1986, two (2) sisters Vassie Lee Taylor (Twin sister), only lived a short life, Ramona Annie Lee Taylor Daniel, three (3) brothers, Augustus C. Taylor, Isaac Taylor, Jyles Taylor, and her parents Escrom C. Taylor, Sr. and Ophelia Andrews Taylor Wilson.
Virgie is survived by four (4) sons, Willie (Kathy) Reliford, Jr., Hue Van Reliford, Jarvis (Jean) Reliford, Elton (Claudette) Applewhite; two (2) daughters, Daron (Christian) Igwe, Vertis Applewhite; four (4) grandsons, Willie Reliford, 111, Stephen Igwe, Maxwell Igwe, LaMar Reliford; six (6) granddaughters, Jasmin Applewhite, Christina Applewhite, Tracy Igwe, Elyse Applewhite, Rachel Chambers, Capresha Reliford, Megan Reliford; one (1) nephew, Joseph Daniel, Jr., of Nebraska: two (2) nieces, Staff Sergeant Mary Theresa Daniel-Rock, U.S. Marine Corps Retired Of Beaufort, SC, Lydia Grace Daniel-Young of Lawton OK.; seven (7) great- grandsons, five (5 ) great- granddaughters; many other nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
