Brian Hornung, 34, of Polk City, Iowa passed away Monday, September 26, 2016. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service following, Friday, September 30, 2016, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Polk City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Polk City.
Brian was born September 25, 1982 to Frank Hornung and Susan Hartung in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated from Preston High school and continued his education at Iowa State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems. Brian also went on to receive his MBA from the University of Iowa. Brian was united in marriage to Lydia Smirniotis on August 30, 2008 at St. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Palos Hills, IL. They were blessed with two daughters, Harper and Addison. Brian and Lydia both worked for John Deere, moving back in 2011 to Polk City where Brian got his dream job working for John Deere Financial as an IT manager in Johnston.
In his free time, Brian enjoyed cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the Bears, even going to many games when he lived in the Quad Cities. He was a collector of autographed sports memorabilia. Brian loved any kind of home improvement work, including fixing various things; woodworking and making his yard look nice. He also enjoyed grilling with his friends and family. Most importantly, Brian loved spending time with his family.
Brian is survived by his wife, Lydia and daughters Harper and Addison; mother, Susan Hartung of Preston, IA; paternal grandmother, Bernadine Hartung and maternal grandparents, Patricia and Francis Ames; sisters, Lisa Hornung of Bettendorf, IA and Sara Hartung of Preston; brothers, Robbie (Vanessa) Hornung of Ankeny, IA, and Michael Hartung of Iowa City, IA; nephews Gabriel Hornung and Levi Hornung; he is further survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins; parents-in-law, Gregory and Gloria Smirniotis; and sister-in-law, Larissa (Ahmed) Hafez. He is preceded in death by his father, Gerald Hartung and paternal grandfather, Joseph Hartung.
