Services will be held in the future.
Carolyn was born on March 22, 1943, in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Gerald and Violet (Cooper) Pennington. In 1961, Carolyn graduated from Stillwater High School in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She attended Oklahoma State University.
Throughout her life, Carolyn was keenly curious about people, visiting new places, and trying new things. She was a gifted organizer and natural leader. In her leadership roles, she helped others to be successful. She also had a flare for sales. Later in life, Carolyn led large travel groups to international destinations, bringing people together with joy and ease.
Though Iowa was home for many years, she remained Southern at heart. She welcomed you with a smile, a hug, and wanted to know all about you. Carolyn often expressed her love by planning and preparing delicious meals for family and friends. There was always a seat at the table for you.
Another Southern tradition she kept all her life included her love of gardening and flowers. Each summer, she would tend a vegetable garden full of tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, okra, and many others. Her back deck overflowed with hibiscus, tropical blooms, and colorful geraniums.
She had a deep love of fun and activity. Some of her favorite activities included sailing, playing games, and sharing stories. No matter the activity, she most especially delighted in laughing with family and friends.
Carolyn’s life was marked by generosity, energy, and connection, and she leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and togetherness. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband of forty years, Peter Romer of Iowa; her sons, Scott Bouton and his wife, Georgina, of Texas, with their children Christopher and his wife, Sarah, and Jaclyn, and Chad and his wife, Heidi, of Connecticut, with their children William and Abigail; as well as her stepson, Robert Romer and his children, Kealin and Tristan, as well as her sister, Janice Wilsey of Texas and her brother, Ron Pennington of Texas. Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jerry Pennington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the family and will be given to a charity of their choosing in loving memory of Carolyn.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be left at www.ankenyfuneralhome.com for the family.
